Excerpt from The Gospel of Slavery: A Primer of Freedom By giving dominion of Nature to man. Men differ in color, and stature, and weight, Nor equal are all in their talent or state, But equal in rights are the great and the small In sight of the God and Creator of all. Then how comes dominion of brother by brother! Or how can the one be the lord of the other? Consider it well - for an answer I crave, That reaches the question of Master and Slave. Excerpt from A Bridge From Slavery to Freedom The service required is too vast and complex for unorganized individuals. It must proceed from the national Government. 'this alone can supply the adequate machinery, and extend the proper network of assistance, with that unity of operation which is required. The national Government must interfere in the case precisely as in building the Pacific railroad. Private charity in our country is active and generous, but it is powerless to cope with the evils arising from a wicked institution nor can it provide a remedy where society itself has been overthrown. There are few who will not admit that something must be done bv the Government. Cold must be that heart which could turn away from this call. But whatever is done must be through some designated agency, and this brings me to another aspect of the question. Excerpt from Freedom and Slavery What had these two voyages to do with each other? Everything. From them came two great movements hostile to each other, and extending over two and a half centuries Of our history. The Treasurer began the course of slavery; the Mayflower, that Of wage labor. From the introduction Of slavery in 1619, until its abolition in 1865, there was not an hour when these hostile forces did not gather strength or meet in Open conflict. For the first two centuries, from 1619 to 1819, both Sides gathered strength for the contest. From 1820 to 1860, the two groups met in intellectual and moral conflict for the possession Of new territory and political power. But the Civil War closed this long conflict. By a thousand battles, four years Of great endeavor, billions of debt, and millions of armed men, two hundred and forty-six years Of shameful history were ended and four million slaves were set free. Excerpt from Harriet Tubman: Who Led Slaves to Freedom Slavery wherever it exists is an evil. In 1619 slavery was introduced into North America when twenty Africans were landed in the state of Virginia. There are now in the United States of America 13,000,000 descendants of these slaves who have been free men and women since the Emancipation Proclamation of President Lincoln in 1863. This is the story of one of these former slaves. Harriet Tubman was born about 1820 in a village in the state of Maryland. She was one of eleven children. Her grandparents came from Africa between 1725 and 1750. Some say that they came from Ashanti, others that they were Fellatas. They were slaves working for tobacco planters. Harriet was a small, thin, very black child. She never went to school. When she was five years old she began to work. When she was six she was taken ten miles away from her home to learn weaving. One day she ran away from her mistress who had whipped her for taking a lump of sugar. She hid from Friday until the next Tuesday. By that time she was so hungry that she went back and was flogged by the master of the house. Some slave owners were good to their slaves but Harriet did not meet them. When she was ill she was sent home to her mother's hut. She always rebelled against her lot. Her father often said to her, "Child, don't fret so about it all. Heed God and be as good as you best know how to be." Harriet's parents went to church regularly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Autographs for Freedom The good cause to which the volume is devoted; the influence which must ever be exerted by persons of exalted character, and high mental endowments the fact that society is slow to accept any cause that has not the baptism of the acknowledged noble and good; - the happiness arising from making any exertion to amelio rate the condition of the injured race amongst us, will, at once, suggest reasons and motives for sending forth this offering, which, while it shall prove acceptable as a gift book, may help to swell the tide of that sentiment that, by the Divine blessing, will sweep away from this other wise happy land, the great sin of slavery. Should this publication be instrumental in casting one ray of hope on the heart of one poor slave, or should it draw the attention of one person, hitherto uninterested. Excerpt from My Bondage and My Freedom: Part I., Life as a Slave; Part II., Life as a Freeman IF the volume now presented to the public were a mere work of art, the history of its misfortune might be written in two very simple words - Too late. The nature and character of slavery have been subjects of an almost endless variety of artistic representation; and after the brilliant achievements in that field, and while those achievements are yet fresh in the memory of the million, he who would add another to the legion, must possess the charm of transcendent exellence, or apologize for something worse than rashness. The reader is, therefore, assured, with all due promptitude, that his attention is not invited to a work of art, but to a work of facts - Facts, terrible and almost ih credible, it may be - yet facts, nevertheless. Excerpt from The Underground Railroad From Slavery to Freedom The book is practically divided into four parts: the Rail road itself (chapters ii, v); the railroad hands (chapters iii, iv, vi); the freight (chapters vii, viii); and political relations and effects (chapters ix, x, xi). Perhaps one of the most interesting contributions to our knowledge of the subject is the account of the beginnings of the system of secret and systematic aid to fugitives. Lite evidence goes to show that there was organization in Pennsylvania before 1800 and in Ohio soon after 1815. The book thus becomes a much-needed guide to information about the obscure anti-slavery movement which preceded William Lloyd Gar rison, and to some degree prepared the way for him; and it will prove a source for the historian of the influence of the West in national development. As yet we know too little of the anti-slavery movement which so profoundly stirred the W'estern states, including Kentucky and Missouri, and which came closely into contact With the actual conditions of slavery. As Professor Siebert points out, most of the early abolitionists in the West were former slaveholders or sons of slaveholders.
