This volume presents the first comprehensive academic study of the history and development of performance art in the former communist countries of Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe since the 1960s. Covering 21 countries and more than 250 artists, this text demonstrates the manner in which performance art in the region developed concurrently with the genre in the West, highlighting the unique contributions of Eastern European artists to the genre. It offers a comparative study of the genre of performance art in countries and cities across the region, examining the manner in which artists addressed issues such as the body, gender, politics and identity, and institutional critique. As the first comprehensive history of the subject, this text is essential for those in the field of performance studies, or those researching contemporary Eastern European art. It will also be of interest to those in Slavic studies, art history and visual culture.

Voices From Within Grotowski S Polish Collaborators written by Paul Allain and has been published by Polish Theatre Perspectives this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-01 with Performing Arts categories.

Voices from Within: Grotowski’s Polish Collaborators brings together, for the first time in English, the distinctive voices of renowned director Jerzy Grotowski’s Polish colleagues, providing a rare insight into different areas of their research and work. Through conversations, recollections, journal entries, images, working notes, and other testimonies, the collection opens up a range of perspectives on this changing practice — both within and beyond the theatre — from the actors, artists, designers, producers, administrators, and investigators who co-created it. The book spans the full period of Grotowski’s career, from the ‘theatre of productions’ phase, through paratheatre and Theatre of Sources, to the final phase of ‘Art as vehicle’ following his emigration from Poland. What emerges from these narratives is a genuinely collaborative endeavour that, as Grotowski himself comments within — in a note distributed with the Laboratory Theatre’s touring productions — is often mistakenly associated with ‘his name and his name alone’. Voices from Within makes an important contribution to international understanding of this work, by offering a multi-vocal ‘insiders’ account’ of the collective and individual searches, uncertainties, discoveries, and experiences that accompanied many of Grotowski’s long-time creative partnerships. This title is available in paperback and as an Open Access ebook.

History Of The Literary Cultures Of East Central Europe written by Marcel Cornis-Pope and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-07-18 with Literary Criticism categories.

The third volume in the History of the Literary Cultures of East-Central Europe focuses on the making and remaking of those institutional structures that engender and regulate the creation, distribution, and reception of literature. The focus here is not so much on shared institutions but rather on such region-wide analogous institutional processes as the national awakening, the modernist opening, and the communist regimentation, the canonization of texts, and censorship of literature. These processes, which took place in all of the region’s cultures, were often asynchronous and subjected to different local conditions. The volume’s premise is that the national awakening and institutionalization of literature were symbiotically interrelated in East-Central Europe. Each national awakening involves a language renewal, an introduction of the vernacular and its literature in schools and universities, the creation of an infrastructure for the publication of books and journals, clashes with censorship, the founding of national academies, libraries, and theaters, a (re)construction of national folklore, and the writing of histories of the vernacular literature. The four parts of this volume are titled: (1) Publishing and Censorship, (2) Theater as a Literary Institution, (3) Forging Primal Pasts: The Uses of Folk Poetry, and (4) Literary Histories: Itineraries of National Self-images.
