Falls are the second leading cause of accidental deaths in the United States, but are overlooked in most literature. Of use to primary care physicians, nurses, insurance adjusters, architects, writers of building codes, attorneys, or anyone who cares for the elderly, this book will tell you how, why, and when people will likely fall, what most likely will be injured, and how such injuries come about. Use this book to answer your questions on how to determine fault and liability between the plaintiff and the defendant in a slip and fall case, applying the traditional premises liability model. The included case studies and examples will help you understand the mechanics and causes of these accidents. The book includes a chapter on osteoporosis and other biomedical factors that cause falls. With the very useful Fall Prevention Manual that is included, you will find potential trouble areas around a building before an accident occurs. Falls and Related Injuries is peerless in its handling of an important and overlooked subject.

"The consequences of slips, trips, and missteps can range from losses of balance to severe injuries with costly, disabling, life-altering, or fatal outcomes. The third edition of this book is a comprehensive reference for all aspects of ambulation slips, trips, missteps, and falls. The authors have provided the material as a useful reference to assist in understanding how ambulating people slip, trip, misstep, and fall and a guide for implementing preventive or mitigating controls to reduce the likelihood of these incidents occurring. This third edition includes updated scientific literature bases, standards, codes, and guidelines; entirely new chapters on distracted walking and drug-induced falls; and ordering of chapters for more useful information flow. The previous versions are Falls and Related Injuries: Slips, Trips, Missteps and Their Consequences published in 2002 and Slips, Trips, Missteps, and Their Consequences (Second Edition) published in 2007. The first chapter provides an overview of the role of the human in the ambulation process and covers human factors and ergonomics principles. Chapters 2 through 8 address why people slip, trip, misstep, and fall; the different types of falls; the fall-inducing hazards; and other human components of the ambulation system. Chapters 9 through 11 discuss the effects of distractions, aging, and pharmacology on ambulation and falls. Chapters 12 through 22 apply human factors/ergonomics, biomechanical, and cognitive principles to ambulation environments. Also discussed are the standards of care to eliminate or control hazard exposure as well as to mitigate the severity of predictable or expected hazard exposure consequences. Chapter 23 addresses the role and value of an expert witness in the preparation of an ambulation fall related case. Chapter 24 is a fall prevention manual that contains checklists for inspecting and identifying premise ambulation hazards. Chapter 25 includes a list of codes and standards applicable to ambulation falls at publication time of this book. Gary M. Bakken, Cindy A. LaRue, and H. Harvey Cohen collaborated to author Chapters 1-10 and 12-25. Chapter 11 was co-authored by James J. O'Donnell III and James T. O'Donnell"--

Provides a thorough overview of systematic methods for reducing risks encountered in diverse work places Filled with more theory, numerous case examples, and references to new material than the original text, this latest edition of a highly acclaimed book on occupational safety and health includes substantial updates and expanded material on management systems, risk assessment methods, and OSH-relevant concepts, principles, and models. Risk-Reduction Methods for Occupational Safety and Health is organized into five parts: background; analysis methods; programmatic methods for managing risk; risk reduction for energy sources; and risk reduction for other than energy sources. It comprehensively covers both system safety methods and OSH management methods applicable to occupational health and safety. Suitable for worldwide applications, the author’s approach avoids reliance on the thousands of rules, codes, and standards by focusing on understanding hazards and reducing risks using strategies and tactics. Includes more content on methods for reducing risks, citations of recent research, and deeper coverage of OSH-relevant concepts, theories, and models Merges methods and principles traditionally associated with occupational hygiene, ergonomics, and safety Provides substantial updates on management systems and theories of occupational incidents, and includes new case studies in many chapters to help demonstrate the "real world" need for identifying and implementing risk-reduction strategies Addresses occupational risks that go beyond current regulations and standards, taking an international approach by stressing risk-reduction strategies Supports adoption of the book for university courses by providing chapter-specific learning exercises and support materials for professors Risk-Reduction Methods for Occupational Safety and Health is ideal for safety professionals, system safety engineers, safety engineers, industrial hygienists, ergonomists, and anyone with OSH responsibilities. "Slips and Falls: A New Approach to Friction Measurements is an explanation of the physics topic of friction and its relation to slips and falls. As well as slipping phenomena, other important and relevant friction related concepts and applications are presented to clearly guide you through this complex topic. This book explains the use of equipment such as tribometers in measuring friction in falls and their level of accuracy. It explains other measuring techniques used and assumptions that come up when working with friction in fall cases, and shows which ones are erroneous and which are valid. It also discusses other aspects that apply to the physics of friction in slip and fall accidents, and gives you a back-to-basics understanding of the physics of falls. It is a great companion volume to Slips, Trips, Missteps and Their Consequences. It is an essential book and a call to action for any professional currently involved in the investigation, research and litigation of slip and fall incidents."--
