Eight, his raigne, King Edward the Sixth, and Queen Marye's raigne, at Morton (Mortham, near Rokeby), then lived Thomas Rokeby, esq., eldest brother, and owner of Morton, a plaine man as might be, whose words came allways from his heart, without feigning, a trustye friend, a forward gentleman in the field, and a great house-keeper; whereby he lived soe in the good wills and good hearts of his countrymenn, that his sonne and heire, Cristofer Eokeby, being assaulted at Gaterley horse race, by Christofer Neville, brother to the mightie Earle of Westmerland, whome the said Earle had sent thither with a hundreth men to kill him, was both defended and guarded from the violence of his adversaries, and was able soe to have rebounded the blowes given him by them, that they shold have spilt the best blood in their bodyes if his partye had been willing, for then not a gentleman in the field but they cryed A Rokeby! But the good old Thomas being in co'mission for the peace co'maunded and entreated peace, as he said, 'Give (if, although) itt grieves me to see him bleed that bleeds, --yet peace the peace;' and, therefore, the King loved him that cold soe well gett the love of his countrye."e This event must have taken place in the year 1533, or a little earlier. Christopher Neville, who thus wanted to stain his hands in the blood of a Rokeby, himself died childless and attainted. The Rokebys are a Yorkshire family of great antiquity. Sir Thomas Rokeby, temp. Edward III., was a gallant e Whitaker's ' Richraondshive.' warrior, and greatly distinguished himself at the battle of Neville's Cross. He afterwards became Lord chief Justice of Ireland. This family continued to be distinguished until the great Civil War, when, having embraced the cause of...

"'Folksongs' interest many people nowadays, because they are meant to be the kinds of songs most of our ancestors sang, before industrialisation, before the mass media, before music and song became commodities, and before all the assorted evils associated with advanced capitalist society. 'Folksongs' and 'ballads' represent real values something honest and straightforward and beautiful to hang on to, and make us feel our roots in the Britain of 1900 or 1800 or even 1700. The only problem with this way of thinking is that it is based on myths. What we now know as 'folksongs' and 'ballads' were sought after, collected, edited and published by individuals who were either members of the rising bourgeoisie, or were ideologically sympathetic to bourgeois culture and values. The working people who sang their songs, and had them chopped up, amended and sometimes re-written or invented on their behalf, are remarkably absent from the story of 'folksong'. Before we can begin to piece together the real history of our ancestors' culture, we have to penetrate the 'mediations' of people like Cecil Sharp, Francis James Child and Albert Lancaster Lloyd, and to begin building again on firmer foundations. This book sets out to clear the ground"--Page 4 of cover.

In the Middle Ages, textual amulets--short texts written on parchment or paper and worn on the body--were thought to protect the bearer against enemies, to heal afflictions caused by demonic invasions, and to bring the wearer good fortune. In Binding Words, Don C. Skemer provides the first book-length study of this once-common means of harnessing the magical power of words. Textual amulets were a unique source of empowerment, promising the believer safe passage through a precarious world by means of an ever-changing mix of scriptural quotations, divine names, common prayers, and liturgical formulas. Although theologians and canon lawyers frequently derided textual amulets as ignorant superstition, many literate clergy played a central role in producing and disseminating them. The texts were, in turn, embraced by a broad cross-section of Western Europe. Saints and parish priests, physicians and village healers, landowners and peasants alike believed in their efficacy. Skemer offers careful analysis of several dozen surviving textual amulets along with other contemporary medieval source materials. In the process, Binding Words enriches our understanding of popular religion and magic in everyday medieval life.
