Knjiga komparativista Toneta Smoleja sodi v okvir raziskovanja slovensko-avstrijskih kulturnih stikov. Avtor v svoji monografiji obravnava 50 slovenskih pisateljev ter slovensko pesnico, ki so v drugi polovici 19. in vse do sredine 20. let 20. stoletja študirali na filozofski, pravni ali medicinski fakulteti dunajske univerze. V prvem delu s pomočjo številnih, doslej neznanih dokumentov iz Arhiva dunajske univerze osvetljuje dunajska študijska leta slovenskih pisateljev in pesnice. Veliko pozornost namenja njihovim spominom na bivanje na Dunaju in zlasti na dunajske univerzitetne profesorje. Smoleja zanima tudi, v kolikšni meri je študij vplival na njihovo poznejšo literarno ustvarjanje. V drugem delu knjige je objavljen popis vseh predavanj, ki so jih pisatelji in pesnica v času študija vpisovali, ter ocene nekaterih njihovih doktorskih disertacij. Zgodovinar Peter Vodopivec, ki je h knjigi napisal uvod, v njem poudarja, da je Smolejevo delo z odgovori na vprašanja, kako so mladi slovenski izobraženci, pesniki in pisatelji pred prvo svetovno vojno, med vojno in neposredno po njej doživljali Dunaj ter univerzitetne učitelje in študij, ki so si ga izbrali, kaj jih je navdušilo, kaj razočaralo in kako so svoje dunajske in študijske izkušnje ter vtise ubesedili v svojih literarnih delih, pomemben prispevek ne le k zgodovini slovenskega izobraženstva, temveč tudi k zgodovini dunajske univerze in dunajskih visokih šol. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ The study by literary historian Tone Smolej – ‘"To Attempt and Become Something Greater": Slovenian Writers as Vienna Students (1850—1926)' – examines the cultural contacts between Slovenians and Austrians. It discusses 51 Slovenian writers, including one woman poet, who studied at the Faculties of Arts, Law or Medicine at Vienna University between the later 19th century and the mid-1920s. The first part traces their years of studies in Vienna, drawing on numerous and previously unknown documents from the Vienna University Archives. In addition to detailing their memories of their Vienna professors, Smolej likewise examines the extent to which each writer’s studies influenced his or her later literary productivity. The second part lists all the courses which the writers attended during their studies, as well as reviews of their doctoral theses. The monograph is prefaced with an introduction by Professor Peter Vodopivec, PhD, an eminent Slovenian historian.
