2024 Barbara Perkins and George Perkins Prize Slow Narrative and Nonhuman Materialities investigates how the experience of slowness in contemporary narrative practices can create a vision of interconnectedness between human communities and the nonhuman world. Here, slowness is not a matter of measurable time but a transformative experience for audiences of contemporary narratives engaging with the ecological crisis. While climate change is a scientific abstraction, the imagination of slowness turns it into a deeply embodied and affective experience. Marco Caracciolo explores the value of slowness in dialogue with a wide range of narratives in various media, from prose fiction to comic books to video games. The dynamic nature of storytelling has long been one of the major concerns of narrative research, but relatively little scholarship has engaged with the relationship between storytelling dynamics and the underlying material forms of cultural texts. This volume seeks to remedy this by asking questions such as: How might the affordances of new media guide audience reception in subtle ways? How might the dynamism of legacy media be better recognized when examined through a multimedial lens? How do the physical processes of production define the horizons of both authorial activity and audience response? The insight that drives these investigations is two-fold: first, that functions and effects of narratives are deeply intertwined with material forces of production, distribution, and reception; and second, that an analysis of any specific narrative must include attention to these material matters and how they affect the unfolding of stories over time. The chapters in this collection explore interplays between material forces and narrative dynamics across a range of genres and intellectual arenas. In doing so, they both fill gaps in current methodological frameworks and call attention to the many gaps that are yet to be filled.

This edited volume celebrates cutting-edge research in stylistics and, more specifically, recent work on sense and the senses. The title originated in the Poetics and Linguistics Association (PALA) 2022 conference and marks the 40th onsite event by showcasing some of the excellent papers delivered on that occasion. Combining narrative and affect studies, it uses formal strategies such as moving metaphor, visceral or affective description, plot-level analogy, contraction, and rhythm to engage with western scientific epistemologies, which still tends towards the impassive, universal, and objective. Reading Digital Fiction offers the first comprehensive and systematic theoretical, methodological, and analytical examination of digital fiction from a cognitive and empirical perspective. Proposing the new concept of “medial reading”, it argues for the centrality of an audience’s interest in, awareness of and/or attention to the medium in which a text is produced and received, and which we argue should be applied to reader data across media. The book analyses and theorises five generations of digital fiction and their reading including hypertext fiction, hypermedia fiction, narrative video games, app fiction, and virtual reality. It showcases medium- and platform-specific methods of qualitative reader response research across a variety of contexts and settings from screen-based and embodied interaction to gallery installation, and from reading group and individual interview to think-aloud methodologies. In this moment of climate precarity, Victorian studies scholar Barbara Leckie considers the climate crisis as a problem of time. Spanning the long nineteenth century through our current moment, her interdisciplinary treatment of climate change at once rethinks time and illustrates that the time for climate action is now. Climate Change, Interrupted argues that linear, progress-inflected temporalities are not adequate to a crisis that defies their terms. Instead, this book advances a theory and practice of interruption to rethink prevailing temporal frameworks.
