Abstract: Slow Tourism proclaims a decelerated and 'deeper' form of tourism. It is about making a conscious choice to experience a destination intensely. The concept is gaining attention as an alternative to contemporary mass tourism but remains under-researched, especially concerning spatial questions. This is crucial because of its emphasis on sensorial experiences of space. Slow tourism, therefore, is conceptualized from the perspective of space production to develop its theoretical construct. Space is understood as a social construct and, in a Lefebvrian sense, is not just produced but also productive. Lefebvre conceptualized a spatial triad consisting of the inseparable moments of perceived space (spatial practice), conceived space (representations of space) and lived space (spaces of representation). From a slow tourism perspective, this means that spatial practices of slow tourists refer to ideas of the slow movement as a conscious choice. These notions of authenticity, sustainability and connectivity signify representations of space, which enable the emergence of a lived counter-space. As a decelerated space, the slow tourism space antagonises people's alienation from accelerated spaces of the everyday life by changing the relationship between the lived body perceived and the tourist's spatial imaginations. In opposition to Lefebvre's understanding of tourism as a commodified practice, slow tourism foregrounds the perception of the destination with all senses and the non-dominant appropriation of space. As a result, slow tourism produces what Lefebvre calls a differential space and a rescue from the alienated relationship between man and space. Analysis of slow tourism offerings and media representations of slow tourism add empirical substance to the theoretical construct of slow tourism spaces and support the sensuously oriented understanding of slow tourism and its contextualization as a spatial problem

It is widely recognized that travel and tourism can have a high environmental impact and make a major contribution to climate change. The extent to which ordinary people can construct, shift, and dismantle borders is seriously neglected in the existing literature. The book explores the ability of citizens to participate in the making of borders, and the empowerment that can result from this bordering and debordering activity. ‘Borderwork’ is the name given to the ways in which ordinary people can make and unmake borders. Borderwork is no longer only the business of nation-states, it is also the business of citizens (and indeed non-citizens). This study of ‘borderwork’ extends the recent interest in forms of bordering which do not necessarily occur at the state’s external borders. However, the changing nature of borders cannot be reduced to a shift from the edges to the interior of a polity. To date little research has been conducted on the role of ordinary people in envisioning, constructing, maintaining, shifting, and erasing borders; creating borders which facilitate mobility for some while creating barriers to mobility for others; appropriating the political resources which bordering offers; contesting the legitimacy of or undermining the borders imposed by others. This book makes an original contribution to the literature and stands to set the agenda for a new dimension of border studies. This book was published as a special issue of Space and Polity.
