Urban renewal and slum rehabilitation have a long history of failure or meager success. Many nations have attempted to address this difficult challenge with very little impact on the lives of slum inhabitants. The United Nations is attempting to solve the problem by convincing industrialized nations to donate large amounts of money to be used on improving some of the physical shortcomings of slums such as providing a safe source of potable water and improving utilities. This effort is important, however, it is only one facet of the problem. Other facets include education, social and health services. This book explores several approaches to solve this problem using incremental steps to train the youth to participate in building new housing and furniture as well as providing the population with employment. The proposed solutions follow a four step approach used in urban planning to find solutions to daunting problems. Organizing the slum population to help themselves, rather than having the government do it for them gives the inhabitants the skill and incentive to maintain their habitat rather than vandalize or neglect it. The author has seen many a well-intended project deteriorate and become as bad as the original it replaced, having worked for the Egyptian government on one of these projects.

What if you had to live on the street? Could you survive? At five years old, John Maina was forced to live on the dangerous streets of an African slum. Several years later, he was taken into an orphanage in the heart of one of Nairobi's vast shantytowns. When he was in high school, he met Paul, an American businessman, who was visiting the orphanage. That day, they bonded instantly, but were only able to spend a few hours together. Twelve years later, through an improbable series of events, John and Paul were miraculously re-united. In an African sense, they are now father and son. Hope and a Future is a beautifully interwoven narrative-the true story of John's harrowing life in the slums; the moving story of the remarkable friendship John and Paul forged; and Paul's personal journey, sharing his spiritual challenges of working in Africa. This is how it happened. No one could make up such an incredible tale.

Find Me Unafraid written by Kennedy Odede and has been published by HarperCollins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-13 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

"Kennedy is living proof that individuals can lead themselves, and their communities, out of poverty." -Salma Hayek Pinault, Time 100 Find Me Unafraid tells the uncommon love story between two uncommon people whose collaboration sparked a successful movement to transform the lives of vulnerable girls and the urban poor. With a Foreword by Nicholas Kristof. This is the story of two young people from completely different worlds: Kennedy Odede from Kibera, the largest slum in Africa, and Jessica Posner from Denver, Colorado. Kennedy foraged for food, lived on the street, and taught himself to read with old newspapers. When an American volunteer gave him the work of Mandela, Garvey, and King, teenaged Kennedy decided he was going to change his life and his community. He bought a soccer ball and started a youth empowerment group he called Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO). Then in 2007, Wesleyan undergraduate Jessica Posner spent a semester abroad in Kenya working with SHOFCO. Breaking all convention, she decided to live in Kibera with Kennedy, and they fell in love.Their connection persisted, and Jessica helped Kennedy to escape political violence and fulfill his lifelong dream of an education, at Wesleyan University. The alchemy of their remarkable union has drawn the support of community members and celebrities alike—The Clintons, Mia Farrow, and Nicholas Kristof are among their fans—and their work has changed the lives of many of Kibera’s most vulnerable population: its girls. Jess and Kennedy founded Kibera’s first tuition-free school for girls, a large, bright blue building, which stands as a bastion of hope in what once felt like a hopeless place. But Jessica and Kennedy are just getting started—they have expanded their model to connect essential services like health care, clean water, and economic empowerment programs. They’ve opened an identical project in Mathare, Kenya’s second largest slum, and intend to expand their remarkably successful program for change. Ultimately this is a love story about a fight against poverty and hopelessness, the transformation made possible by a true love, and the power of young people to have a deep impact on the world.

Humanity has existed on earth for thousands of years, yet we are just now beginning to experience a kind of community that has never before existed—the slum community. As the number of slum communities and those living in them continue to rise at an alarming rate, Christians need to examine their role in sharing the hope, joy, healing, and servanthood of Christ to those in despair. Quest for Hope in the Slum Community is a collection of the diverse dialog that exists in the area of urban transformation. Everything from housing to street children along with a healthy collection of articles around a theology of urban poverty is addressed. This material is designed to stimulate the imagination of those exploring the question of how to address with compassion and conviction the stark realities of urban poverty.

Planet Of Slums written by Mike Davis and has been published by Verso Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-09-17 with Political Science categories.

According to the united nations, more than one billion people now live in the slums of the cities of the South. In this brilliant and ambitious book, Mike Davis explores the future of a radically unequal and explosively unstable urban world. From the sprawling barricadas of Lima to the garbage hills of Manila, urbanization has been disconnected from industrialization, and even from economic growth. Davis portrays a vast humanity warehoused in shantytowns and exiled from the formal world economy. He argues that the rise of this informal urban proletariat is a wholly unforeseen development, and asks whether the great slums, as a terrified Victorian middle class once imagined, are volcanoes waiting to erupt.

Slum Health written by Jason Corburn and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-07 with Business & Economics categories.

Urban slum dwellers—especially in emerging-economy countries—are often poor, live in squalor, and suffer unnecessarily from disease, disability, premature death, and reduced life expectancy. Yet living in a city can and should be healthy. Slum Health exposes how and why slums can be unhealthy; reveals that not all slums are equal in terms of the hazards and health issues faced by residents; and suggests how slum dwellers, scientists, and social movements can come together to make slum life safer, more just, and healthier. Editors Jason Corburn and Lee Riley argue that valuing both new biologic and “street” science—professional and lay knowledge—is crucial for improving the well-being of the millions of urban poor living in slums.
