Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The last decade was characterized by mainly to major developments. The first was the ongoing globalization of the markets. A development that was not absolutely new in the nineties, since it is already progressing since the fifties. But it was in recent years when this development gained such an unprecedented momentum and dynamics, which most people and enterprises were just not prepared for. The second was the emerge of the Internet and the following e-hype about the new economy . Larry Downes named both in his much considered article Behind Porter as two of three new driving forces and influencing factors for the economic affairs of the new century. And he might probably be right. Although one of them suffered quite a setback at the end of the nineties when the Internet bubble finally busted. But if one looks on the technological developments taking place then there is no doubt, that the Internet will continue its triumphal procession. Certainly in a different way as it did in the last decade. And probably it will not constitute a new economy, but it certainly will extremely change the old one. The same is true for globalization, although its effects are maybe not that obvious. But the trend towards one global market is obvious. The last event in that respect was probably the Peoples Republic of China entering the World Trade Organization and opening thereby up its markets for foreign enterprises. Before that background and as policy-makers and business-people look for development paths which might take economies successfully over the next decades, three of the issues which are receiving a lot of attention are: What is the effect of globalization ? What is the role of small and medium-sized enterprises? What is the impact of electronic commerce , the rapidly changing ways in which commercial activities may be undertaken using innovations in information technology? The small and medium-sized enterprises are building the backbone of the German economy. These companies where responsible for the fast recovery of Germany after Second World War and since them have greatly contributed to develop Germany to the third largest economy in terms of gross national product in the world. Ludwig Erhardt, former German Chancellor and influential Minister of economics, once described the importance of the Mittelstand for the German economy and society in a speech held in Göteburg 50 years ago. And his words retain their [...]

Globalization has jarred the traditional role and competitiveness of small- and medium-sized enterprises. This masterful volume comprises leading scholars, policy makers and business leaders who have new insights and strategies for SMEs creating opportunities rather than being victims of globalization. The result is a breakthrough in our understanding of entrepreneurship in the global context. David B. Audretsch, Indiana University, Bloomington, US and WHU, Germany Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often have difficulty competing in the global economy unless they collaborate with domestic or foreign partners or with public sector organizations. This book addresses the resource leverage and innovation challenges that increased global trade represents for SMEs. In doing so, it explores how SMEs can become more competitive at home and in foreign markets as stand-alone firms or as members of supplier and customer networks. SMEs are turning increasingly to innovation as a source of competitive advantage in order to protect their home markets and participate in expanding foreign markets. The contributors to this volume leading experts in entrepreneurship, innovation, and international business provide in-depth coverage of the most compelling issues facing SMEs. These include: innovation as a competitive strategy, network dynamics, ways to leverage technology, internationalization, and the role of the public sector in helping SMEs to overcome resource deficiencies. This comprehensive look at SMEs in the global marketplace will be of great interest to academics who study entrepreneurship, innovation, or international business, officials from public sector agencies with responsibility for helping SMEs to internationalize and become more innovative, and senior executives of SMEs or executives of larger companies who are considering collaboration with SMEs.

The drivers of globalization are removing the barriers that segregated the competitive space of the small and large firms in the past. It is becoming increasingly difficult for independent small firms to thrive in their traditional markets unless they are globally competitive. Managing an enterprise's commercial, industrial and political relations well, regardless of size and location, is the essence of the entrepreneurial challenge in this competitive arena. Small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) often face very different issues than large multinational enterprises do when confronting internationalization. This volume provides an in-depth discussion of these challenges. The contributors to this volume explore the emerging patterns of SME growth and international expansion in response to the evolving competitive environment, dynamics of competitive behavior, entrepreneurial processes and formulation of strategy. They examine the basis and requirements of growth and expansion from three perspectives: the rapidly-changing environment in which business is conducted, entrepreneurial characteristics, and the evolving strategic and competitive response to this changing business environment. Business leaders, scholars and students interested in international business and entrepreneurship will welcome this volume.

The Routledge Companion to Global Internet Histories brings together research on the diverse Internet histories that have evolved in different regions, language cultures and social contexts across the globe. While the Internet is now in its fifth decade, the understanding and formulation of its histories outside of an anglophone framework is still very much in its infancy. From Tunisia to Taiwan, this volume emphasizes the importance of understanding and formulating Internet histories outside of the anglophone case studies and theoretical paradigms that have thus far dominated academic scholarship on Internet history. Interdisciplinary in scope, the collection offers a variety of historical lenses on the development of the Internet: as a new communication technology seen in the context of older technologies; as a new form of sociality read alongside previous technologically mediated means of relating; and as a new media "vehicle" for the communication of content.
