The growth of inverter-based resources (IBRs) in modern power systems can challenge system stability since they do not natively provide inertia, prompting a need to develop new methods to address the potential instabilities. In this paper, a dynamically configurable grid-forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) control is proposed, which enables inverters to flexibly transition to support system needs. The operation mode transition between GFM and GFL controls is adopted as an additional degree of control flexibility to adjust the small-signal stability margin. In addition, a holistic and detailed small-signal model for a distribution feeder that captures the dynamics from both synchronous generators (SGs) and IBRs is also derived and used to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed GFM/GFL controls to augment the system small-signal stability margin. Case studies with varying levels of IBRs were implemented in MATLAB/Simulink to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

"An approach to modeling externally controlled inverters in droop controlled microgrids is presented. A generic three-phase grid-tied inverter and control system model is derived in synchronous reference frame. The structure of this inverter is intended to be similar in composition to other three-phase inverters whose models and dynamics are well understood. This model is used as a starting point in the development of a more comprehensive model, which is capable of representing the coupling between complex power, bus voltage, and frequency that occurs in a microgrid. This new model is a combination of the generic inverter and an autonomous, grid-forming inverter with a local load. The accuracy of the new model is verified through comparisons of small-signal dynamic predictions, simulations, and experimental results from a microgrid testbed. The proposed procedure of modifying an existing small-signal model for use in a microgrid system retains the information of the original model while successfully enabling the prediction of dynamic interactions with other generating units in the microgrid. The process is scalable for any number of inverters at the same point of connection, allowing accurate predictions of full system dynamics during distributed control actions, such as black start or grid-resynchronization. Traditional linear control techniques may be used to improve the performance and stability of the microgrid system. This is a demonstrated in an analysis of the system's eigenvalues. Drawing from the insights provided by this analysis, hardware and control parameters are selected to improve the response of the generic inverter"--Abstract, page iii.

Grid-forming (GFM) inverters are a promising technology for the widespread integration of renewable energy sources in future power systems. As a key element of GFM inverter control, the primary controller governs the internal reference voltage and angle. During contingencies in the grid--such as faults, voltage drops, or frequency and phase jumps--an inverter can be forced into a current-limiting mode of operation modulating inverter dynamics, and, as a result, it is prone to losing synchronism with the grid. In this paper, we propose a novel GFM primary control method with an additional synchronization term that naturally activates during contingencies to improve the dynamic response. The method allows the inverter to remain synchronized with the grid, which improves the inverter's dynamic behavior both during and after current-limiting grid conditions and enhances grid support, including voltage support using full current capacity. The method is demonstrated for voltage, frequency, and phase jumps both in a single-machine-to-infinite-bus and a network-wide electromagnetic transient simulation of the IEEE 14-bus system with 5 GFM inverters. The simulations provide insights into the proposed synchronization method and confirm the high potential of the method, which robustly secures synchronism under severe contingencies.

The stability of power systems and microgrids is compromised by the increasing penetration with power electronic devices, such as wind turbines, photovoltaics and batteries. A simulation and optimization environment for such low-inertia systems is created. It is investigated how accurate the models need to be to capture the prevailing modes. An evolutionary algorithm tailored to optimization problems with computationally intensive fitness evaluation is proposed in order to optimized the controller parameters of grid-forming and grid-supporting distributed generators. It becomes apparent that microgrids dominated by grid-forming inverters are very stable systems when well-designed and optimized controllers are used. Model simplifications, such as the neglect of inner control loops of inverters, must be examined carefully, as they can lead to an inaccurate stability assessment.

Transient Stability Study Of A Real World Microgrid With 100 Renewables Preprint written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022 with categories.
This paper performs a transient stability study of a real-world microgrid with 100% renewables to fully understand the stability and reliability of the microgrid under various dynamic scenarios. In particular, the operation of multiple grid-forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) inverters in such a power system is not well understood under dynamic operation conditions, such as islanding and black start; therefore, in this paper, the full-scale electromagnetic transient modeling of the microgrid is developed to investigate the stability of the system under various dynamic operating conditions and to identify potential reliability risks. The PSCAD/EMTDC simulation with the high-fidelity model provides helpful insights into the optimal operation modes of GFM and GFL inverters as well as the stability and reliability of the microgrid, which gives good references for the field deployment in terms of inverter configuration and coordination as well as the capabilities of black start and unplanned islanding.
