A collection of ten stories about people under siege: families broken on the rack of abuse and alcohol, unwanted children, lovesick and lonesome women, poverty-stricken poets. Stories set in the unswept corners of the city: whorehouses, reform schools, the washrooms of bus depots, unheated apartments, underground garages and subway stations. The world just beyond the margin of these pages is heavy with raging wars, starvation, and injustice. Yet Dandurand's characters are not victims. Under siege, yes, but not conquered; down, certainly, but not out. In fact, they are very much alive. And kicking. Resisting with every breath, and with all the cunning and cruelty they can muster. In the individual and daily battle with pitiless and unthinking gods, these small souls deploy an arsenal of dreams. Dandurand's encyclopedia of strategy and tactics of quotidian resistance includes everything from an invisible dog companion named Paradox and a closet full of imaginary voyages, to a love potion. And, finally, the ultimate weapon: the power of a well-turned phrase.

Souls Under Siege written by Nicole Archambeau and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021 with France categories.

In Souls under Siege, Nicole Archambeau explores how the inhabitants of southern France made sense of the ravages of successive waves of plague, the depredations of mercenary warfare, and the violence of royal succession during the fourteenth century. Many people, she finds, understood both plague and war as the symptoms of spiritual sicknesses caused by excessive sin, and they sought cures in confession. Archambeau draws on a rich evidentiary base of 68 narrative testimonials from the canonization inquest for Countess Delphine de Puimichel, which was held in the market town of Apt in 1363. Each witness in the proceedings had lived through the outbreaks of plague in 1348 and 1361, as well as the violence inflicted by mercenaries unleashed by truces in the Hundred Years' War. Consequently, their testimonies unexpectedly reveal the importance of faith and the role of affect in the healing of body and soul alike. Faced with an unprecedented cascade of crises, the inhabitants of Provence relied on saints and healers, their worldview connecting earthly disease and disaster to the struggle for their eternal souls. Souls under Siege illustrates how medieval people approached sickness and uncertainty by using a variety of remedies, making clear that "healing" had multiple overlapping meanings in this historical moment.

What do ministers do when they get depressed? Do they just work because "the show must go on"? Some ministers may, but C. Welton Gaddy did not. In this intensely personal book, described by Wayne E. Oates as "frank, considerate, and attention keeping," the author tells the story of how he "stopped the show," entered a well-organized, modern psychiatric unit, and received psychiatric care. He also tells of his discovery in the hospital of a more honest community than he had ever known in the church. Gaddy describes his experiences as a pastoral minister who went from good to bad health (including a deep depression) and back to even better health. In a sometimes painfully confessional but always soundly theological narrative, the author takes a realistic look at those aspects of ministry that can be destructive.

For more than thirty years, Skeptical Inquirer has steadfastly championed science and reason, and has been the leading voice for reliable scientific examination of the paranormal and other questionable claims popularized by the media and mass culture. In this collection of outstanding articles, editor Kendrick Frazier has selected some of the best writing on topics of current interest. Among the highlights are: - "A Skeptical Look at September 11th," which prompted a drove of responses (many angry) and was selected by Richard Dawkins for the Best Science and Nature Writing of 2003. - Carl Sagan's final question-and-answer piece on the topic of science and skeptical inquiry. - Ann Druyan's beautifully expressed "Science, Religion, Wonder, and Awe." - NASA scientist Stuart Jordan's excellent appraisal of the scientific evidence for global warming, which prompted much critical response and led to another follow-up article. - Perspectives by Judge John E. Jones III, Barbara Forrest, David Morrison, Massimo Pigliucci, and Charles Sullivan and Cameron McPherson Smith on the evolution vs. intelligent design controversy. - Articles by physicians Steven Novella and Richard G. Judelsohn that strongly defend the value of vaccinations and critique the anti-vaccination movement. Additional distinguished contributors include Mario Bunge, Martin Gardner, Paul Kurtz, Chris Mooney, Steven Pinker, Ray Hyman, Joe Nickell, and many others. This collection of stimulating articles exploring science and skeptical inquiry, examining public controversies, and investigating pseudoscientific claims is a must for scientists, educators, skeptics, and everyone concerned about scientific literacy.

It’s been 15 years since Conrad Dixson and Skye Burgeson were not-so-friendly competitors in training and five years since Dix dragged SIEGE from the rubble of corruption. When someone targets both of them personally and professionally, they struggle to overcome old trust issues and an attraction neither one has room for so they can work together to save both companies. As their investigation shapes a puzzle they can’t make any sense of, their feelings for each other become frighteningly clear. Dix doesn’t want to fall for the smart, clever, fearless woman who could be involved in crushing the business he’s put his entire life into protecting. And Skye is terrified that letting him in will threaten the life she’s built to honor her heroic brother who died in action. The journey leads them to a familiar enemy who’s been using prime and petty revenge motivations to cover his true purpose, escalating until threats to the people Dix and Skye love force them to face unacceptable decisions.
