The authors have developed the ethical imagination inviting a sense of “otherness” towards the vulnerable self, rebounding care for the other as a way to understand our everyday neurotic (normal) tendency of small vices as the propensity and possibility for responsibility towards the other. The authors, inviting the reader into troublesome feelings such as laziness and anger, bring a Levinasian horizon into focus, so that even in the midst of laziness, there remains the small goodness to set the self free to care for the other, meeting the demands, challenges, hesitation, shuddering, tension and shocks of such alterity, of living “otherwise”.

"As DC Jane Salt investigates a series of increasingly violent cash heists in the London area, her lover, Inspector Frank Kavanagh, is seconded to NCIS who are pursuing a serial killer targeting prostitutes in the Midlands. Kavanagh finds that things are about to become more complicated when Rachel, his beguiling ex-wife from whom he has never really broken free, makes a dramatic re-appearance in his life. Back in London, Kavanagh's boss, ACC Michael Highland, due to take up the new government appointment of 'drugs tsar' in the near future, is desperately fighting to maintain the appearance of an untarnished past. He resorts to calling in favours from contacts in high places - a dangerous strategy which could lead to trouble. As environmentalists near the site of one of the murders stage a heated demonstration, an unexpected rapport develops between the world-weary cop and a young eco-warrior which eventually helps Kavanagh unlock the mystery of the killer's whereabouts. But even with this information, can Kavanagh and long-time friend and colleague, DS Presley, act in time to prevent the death of yet another abducted street girl?"--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Enlightenment And Political Fiction written by Cecilia Miller and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-22 with History categories.

The easy accessibility of political fiction in the long eighteenth century made it possible for any reader or listener to enter into the intellectual debates of the time, as much of the core of modern political and economic theory was to be found first in the fiction, not the theory, of this age. Amusingly, many of these abstract ideas were presented for the first time in stories featuring less-than-gifted central characters. The five particular works of fiction examined here, which this book takes as embodying the core of the Enlightenment, focus more on the individual than on social group. Nevertheless, in these same works of fiction, this individual has responsibilities as well as rights—and these responsibilities and rights apply to every individual, across the board, regardless of social class, financial status, race, age, or gender. Unlike studies of the Enlightenment which focus only on theory and nonfiction, this study of fiction makes evident that there was a vibrant concern for the constructive as well as destructive aspects of emotion during the Enlightenment, rather than an exclusive concern for rationality.
