The Prevention And Intervention Of Genocide written by Samuel Totten and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-08 with Political Science categories.

Over the last twenty years the world has witnessed four major genocides. There was the genocide in Iraq (1988), in Rwanda (1994), in Srebrenica (1995), and in Darfur (2003 and continuing). Most observers agree there is an urgent need to assess the international community's efforts to prevent genocide and to intervene (once a genocide is under way) in an effective and timely manner. This volume, the latest in a widely respected series on the subject of genocide, provides an overview of a host of issues germane to this task. The book begins with a cogent discussion of the issues of prevention and intervention during the Cold War years. The second chapter discusses the abject failures and moderate (though, in some cases, highly controversial) successes at prevention and intervention carried out in the 1990s and early 2000s. Further chapters examine latest efforts to develop an effective genocide early warning system and examine the complexity of and barriers to prevention. The pros and cons of sanctions and the problems of enforcement and evaluation their effectiveness are then discussed. Conflicts between state sovereignty and the protection of threatened populations are examined both in historical context and by incorporating the latest thinking. Later chapters treat the issue of intervention; why and how it has met with only limited success. Concentrating on Rwanda and Srebrenica, chapter 8 discusses various peace operations that were abject failures and those that were moderately successful. The concept of an anti-genocide regime is examined in terms of progress in developing such a regime as well as what the international community must do in order to implement it. Chapters discuss key issues related to post-genocidal periods, those that need to be addressed in order to establish stability in a wounded land and populace as well as to prevent future genocides. The final chapter asks whether bringing perpetrators to justice has any impact in breaking impunity, ensuring deterrence, and bringing about reconciliation. The contributors to the volume are all noted scholars, some of whom specialize in the study of genocide, and others who specialize in such areas as early warning, peacekeeping, and sanctions.

Is there a chance that a democratically elected African President can steer his country that lies below the equator to be an ethically, non-corruptive, law-abiding place to live? Could he achieve a similar sort of headway that Singapore succeeded to attain? Will this president become threatened by his countless enemies and stripped of his resources to then go about his work in an honest and undisputed way? Will the plundering and corruption that has been Africa’s trademark for centuries prevail? In this thought-provoking and intriguing novel, President Joshua Luombe Semba and his loyal team try to thwart an attack and prove precisely the opposite. Acting strongly and following his own belief and naivety, Semba goes through thick and thin - earning himself his nickname Tinga Tinga – the bulldozer. His wananchi’s, the proud citizens of Tanzania, are baffled. Slowly but surely, they too fall under the spell of the vigour and intensity. How long will he hang on in there? Read the philosophical verging on a true story written by the anonymous world citizen Ajeka & Fox, who wish to protect their creative privacy. For the consequences remain uncertain in this somewhat grisly tropical neck of the woods.

From Bloodshed To Hope In Burundi written by Ambassador Robert Krueger and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-03-06 with History categories.

In 1994, while nations everywhere stood idly by, 800,000 people were slaughtered in eight weeks in Rwanda. Arriving as U.S. Ambassador to neighboring Burundi a few weeks later, Bob Krueger began drawing international attention to the genocide also proceeding in Burundi, where he sought to minimize the killing and to preserve its fledgling democratic government from destruction by its own army. From Bloodshed to Hope in Burundi is a compelling eyewitness account of both a horrific and persistent genocide and of the ongoing efforts of many courageous individuals to build a more just society. Krueger and his wife Kathleen graphically document the slaughter occurring all around them, as well as their repeated efforts to get the U.S. government and the international community to take notice and take action. Bob Krueger reconstructs the events of the military coup that precipitated the Burundi genocide and describes his efforts to uncover the truth by digging up graves and interviewing survivors. In straightforward and powerful language, Kathleen Krueger recounts her family's experience living amid civil war, including when she faced down a dozen AK-47-wielding African soldiers to save the life of a household worker. From Bloodshed to Hope in Burundi shines a piercing light on a genocide that has gone largely unreported, and identifies those responsible for it. It also offers hope that as the truth emerges and the perpetrators are brought to account, the people of Burundi will at last achieve peace and reconciliation.

To Bruce Goldstein-an edgy, twenty-something New Yorker trying to make his mark in advertising-just waking up in the morning was an ordeal. Underemployed and recently dumped, he was well into the downward spiral of bipolar disorder. Even with therapy, lithium, Paxil, Wellbutrin, and Prozac, he could not shake his rapid mood swings, his fear of dying, or the voice of Satan, who first visited him one sunny day in Central Park. Then came Ozzy, a black Labrador pup (named after metal's "Prince of Darkness") who leads Bruce toward recovery through complete, canine dependence. From the depths of his despair to a life remade, Bruce shows how learning to care for, train, and love the hilariously loyal Ozzy provided him with the structure and focus he needed to heal.

African migrants have become increasingly demonised in public debate and political rhetoric. There is much speculation about the incentives and trajectories of Africans on the move, and often these speculations are implicitly or overtly geared towards discouraging and policing their movements. What is rarely understood or scrutinised however, are the intricate ways in which African migrants are marginalised and excluded from public discourse; not only in Europe but in migrant-receiving contexts across the globe. Invisibility in African Displacements offers a series of case studies that explore these dynamics. What tends to be either ignored or demonised in public debates on African migration are the deliberate strategies of avoidance or assimilation that migrants make use of to gain access to the destinations or opportunities they seek, or to remain below the radar of restrictive governance regimes. This books offers fine-grained analysis of the ways in which African migrants negotiate structural and strategic invisibilities, adding innovative approaches to our understanding of both migrant vulnerabilities and resilience.

Command Sergeant Major Cleveland Spires lost his family, his career, his pride and ten years of his life while in prison for something he didn't do. Now, he's out and simply trying to reestablish himself when he uncovers a clue that might prove his innocence. He heads down a dark and twisting path that leads him to Bangkok, Thailand and on to Tokyo, Japan where the path suddenly widens into a road, a road leading directly to war. Coalition warfare is nothing new. In fact, the US has become masterful at building them. But what happens when the coalition isn't one the US has built; instead it's one whose intent is to destroy the global economy. This is a story of international intrigue, politics and American military power. The military organizations are real. The characters represent the men and women of the US Armed Forces who work every day at protecting America's interests. In the aftermath of 9/11, Colin Powell said that despite America's terribly sophisticated intelligence gathering ability, there is no substitute for something as simple as a human being on the ground, who overhears something. Powell's comment.
