Don Kerr has enticed the smokey atmosphere of classic film noir out of the confessional and into the brightly-coloured light of poetry. Written in response to Richard Klein's Cigarettes are Sublime (Duke University Press 1993), and charged with powerful biography, Kerr's poems trumpet simplicity and an invigorating directness, while avoiding the doubletalk of political correctness and phoniness of sentimental nostalgia.

Smoke written by Dorianne Laux and has been published by BOA Editions, Ltd. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Humor categories.

Dorianne Laux's long-awaited third book of poetry follows her collection, What We Carry, a finalist for the 1994 National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry. In Smoke, Laux revisits familiar themes of family, working class lives and the pleasures of the body in poetry that is vital and artfully crafted--poetry that "gets hard in the face of aloofness," in the words of one reviewer. In Smoke, as in her previous work, Laux weaves the warp and woof of ordinary lives into extraordinary and complex tapestries. In "The Shipfitter's Wife," a woman recalls her husband's homecoming at the end of his work day: Then I'd open his clothes and take the whole day inside me--the ship's gray sides, the miles of copper pipe, the voice of the foreman clanging off the hull's silver ribs. Spark of lead kissing metal. The clamp, the winch, the white fire of the torch, the whistle, and the long drive home. And in the title poem, Laux muses on her own guilty pleasures: Who would want to give it up, the coal a cat's eye in the dark room, no one there but you and your smoke, the window cracked to street sounds, the distant cries of living things. Alone, you are almost safe . . . With her keen ear and attentive eye, Dorianne Laux offers us a universe with which we are familiar, but gives it to us fresh. Dorianne Laux is the author of two previous collections of poetry from BOA Editions, Ltd., and is co-author, with Kim Addonizio, of The Poet's Companion: A Guide to the Joys of Writing Poetry (W.W. Norton, 1997), chosen as an alternate selection by several bookclubs. Laux was the judge for the 2012 A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Contest, and is a tenured professor in the creative writing program at the University of Oregon. Laux lives in Eugene, Oregon.

We can see as apocalyptic book that offers a rare text, true, perverse and full of light and darkness. We are coming to the end of 2022, country divided socially and politically, politics does not fit because it does not depend on its capacity, but on imperfect humans, to the point of a certain brainless atmosphere taking over the country, reaching mainly the productive and academic segments, including a small prosperous municipality that suffers constantly, from the evasion of foreign exchange in purchases and complete lack of knowledge of public economy by the pseudo managers installed in government headquarters, creating a new order with an imperialist air implanted by those elected that lead to a counterpoint to those citizens who fight every day for their citizenship and who do not align themselves with the ideological political activism of those elected on duty. These suffer unbridled persecution for not applauding the excesses and lies propagated to the most faithful residents of this land, creating a smokescreen to create distractions and continue with their misdeeds. History was subjected to cruelty, forced to alter the normality of its course, placing disinformation as the main focus to the point that the streets changed names, the date of political emancipation modified and mistakenly disclosed in accordance with the political interests of the president, the streets who historically gave rise to the city lost their names so that neophytes could be honored as if they were heroes. Misinformation has taken root and is consolidated. For barbarism, everything is valid to the point of celebrating the city's birthday on an unformed date, prohibiting the circulation of commemorative party attractions in streets where enemies have their business and the rulers attract to them the rotten attitudes without laurels and without victories that would in no way make any citizen happy who contributes to the development of the city. Smokescreen written by Chad T. Hanson and has been published by University Press of Kentucky this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-25 with Nature categories.

Smokescreen cuts through years of misunderstanding and misdirection to make an impassioned, evidence-based argument for a new era of forest management for the sake of the planet and the human race. Natural fires are as essential as sun and rain in fire-adapted forests, but as humans encroach on wild spaces, fear, arrogance, and greed have shaped the way that people view these regenerative events and given rise to misinformation that threatens whole ecosystems as well as humanity's chances of overcoming the climate crisis. Scientist and activist Chad T. Hanson explains how natural alarm over wildfire has been marshaled to advance corporate and political agendas, notably those of the logging industry. He also shows that, in stark contrast to the fear-driven narrative around these events, contemporary research has demonstrated that forests in the United States, North America, and around the world have a significant deficit of fire. Forest fires, including the largest ones, can create extraordinarily important and rich wildlife habitats as long as they are not subjected to postfire logging. Smokescreen confronts the devastating cost of current policies and practices head-on and ultimately offers a hopeful vision and practical suggestions for the future—one in which both communities and the climate are protected and fires are understood as a natural and necessary force.

Asian Diaspora Poetry In North America written by Benzi Zhang and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-12-12 with Literary Collections categories.

Presenting a new way of reading that helps us discern some previously unnoticed or unnoticeable features of Asian diaspora poetry, this volume highlights how poetry plays a significant role in mediating and defining cross-cultural and transnational positions. Asian diaspora poetry in North America is a rich body of poetic works that not only provide valuable material for us to understand the lives and experiences of Asian diasporas, but also present us with an opportunity to examine some of the most important issues in current literary and cultural studies. As a mode of writing across cultural and national borders, these poetic works challenge us to reconsider the assumptions and meanings of identity, nation, home, and place in a broad cross-cultural context. In recent postcolonial studies, diaspora has been conceived not only as a process of migration in which people crossed and traversed the borders of different countries, but also as a double relationship between different cultural origins. With all its complexity and ambiguity associated with the experience of multi-cultural mediation, diaspora, as both a process and a relationship, suggests an act of constant repositioning in confluent streams that accommodate to multiple cultural traditions. By examining how Asian diaspora poets maintain and represent their cultural differences in North America, Zhang is able to seek new perspectives for understanding and analyzing the intrinsic values of Asian cultures that survive and develop persistently in North American societies.

This study outlines the history and anatomy of the European apology tradition from the sixth century BCE to 1500 for the first time. The study examines the vernacular and Latin tales, lyrics, epics, and prose compositions of Arabic, English, French, German, Greek, Icelandic, Italian, Spanish, and Welsh authors. Three different strands of the apology tradition can be proposed. The first and most pervasive strand features apologies to pagan deities and-later-to God. The second most important strand contains literary apologies made to an earthly audience, usually of women. A third strand occurs more rarely and contains apologies for varying literary offenses that are directed to a more general audience. The medieval theory of language privileges an imitation of the Christian master narrative and a hierarchical medieval view of authorship. These notions express a medieval philosophical concern about language and its role, and therefore the role of the author, in cosmic history. Despite the fact that women apologize for different purposes and reasons, their examples illustrate, on yet another level, the antifeminist subtext inherent in the entire apology tradition. Overall, the apology tradition characterized by interauctoriality, intertextuality, and intratextuality, enables self-critical authors to refer not only backward but also-primarily-forward, making the medieval apology a progressive strategy that engenders new literature. This study would be relevant to all medievalists, especially those interested in literature and the history of ideas.
