Pembelajaran IPA yang didasarkan pada standar isi akan membentuk siswa yang memiliki bekal ilmu pengetahuan (have a body of knowledge), standar proses akan membentuk siswa yang memiliki keterampilan ilmiah (scientific skills), keterampilan berpikir (thinking skills) dan strategi berpikir (strategy of thinking); standar inkuiri ilmiah akan membentuk siswa yang mampu berpikir kritis dan kreatif (critical and creative thinking); standar asesmen mengevaluasi siswa secara manusiawi artinya sesuai apa yang dialami siswa dalam pembelajaran (authentic assessment). Penerapan standar-standar dalam pembelajaran IPA khususnya empat standar tersebut akan memberikan soft skill berupa karakter siswa, untuk itu sangat diperlukan pembelajaran IPA yang menerapkan standar-standar guna membangun karakter siswa.
