"So There I Was...Tales from the Flight Line" is intended to offer a look through the window of my career in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1981 through 2003. Beginning with life at the Canadian Forces Recruit School in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia the journey winds its way through the different air force squadrons that I was assigned to and finally landing at the point when I retired from active service. The people in this book are real as are the incidents that I witnessed however some of the "Tales" have been ethically sanitized as not to offend some parties. The last two chapters are dedicated to informing the reader how a callous Canadian government has systematically allowed the Canadian military, and more specifically the Royal Canadian Air Force slide into the procurement abyss and how the Canadian Armed Forces may be revived. Regimental Sargent-Major (Rtd) John Butler, of the British Royal Green Jackets Regiment, recommends that any young person who is thinking about joining the RCAF could not be briefed any better as to a type of career than by reading this book.

Formed just two months after Pearl Harbor and rushed to the Pacific by General MacArthur, the 317th Troop Carrier Group entered combat at Wau, New Guinea just one week after landing in Australia. For over two and a half years the men of the 317th flew their unarmed transports over enemy-held territory while living in the hot, humid, disease-infested jungles of New Guinea and the Philippines; many times subjected to Japanese bombings and ground attacks. Their reputation of getting the job done at all costs resulted in the Group being chosen by the 5th AF's General Kenney as the Troop Carrier Group to drop paratroopers in the SWPA; participating in all five major parachute drops in the Pacific: Nadzab, Noemfoor, Tagaytay Ridge, Corregidor and Aparri. These stories, told by the men themselves, chronicle the actions of both the air crews and the often forgotten men on the ground; during and immediately following the war in the Pacific.

A fully illustrated account of Middle East Command’s strike force as told by its pilots and airmen, from the author of Hunters Over Arabia. After two years servicing Vampire trainers at the RAF’s Central Flying School, Ray Deacon left Little Rissington and joined thirty fellow airmen for a voyage out to Aden aboard HMT Nevassa on her last sailing as a troopship. Posted to 8 Squadron at RAF Khormaksar, he spent the next two years living and working in the torrid heat of this desert outpost. It had its compensations, however—the opportunity not only to experience life on a busy front-line operational squadron while working on ground attack and fighter reconnaissance versions of the Hawker Hunter, but to savor the delights of a trip in aeronautical engineer Sydney Camm’s most versatile aircraft topping his list. In addition to defending the skies above Aden and its Protectorates, Middle East Command expended a large proportion of its energy supporting army activities in the mountains of the Aden hinterland: dropping supplies, transporting personnel between posts, and in the case of the Hunter squadrons, attacking dissident targets and patrolling the border with Yemen. It was against this background that Deacon wrote his first book on RAF Middle East Command operations, Hunters over Arabia. Tales from the Frontline: Middle East Hunters is a fully illustrated companion volume that comprises anecdotes, stories, and experiences of life on the Hunter squadrons as told by the pilots and airmen who flew and maintained the Hunter during its twelve-year tenure in Arabia.

An in-depth look at these Cold War–era bombers, in the words of those who flew them—includes photos. The Vulcan, the second of the three V bombers built to guard the United Kingdom during the Cold War, has become an aviation icon like the Spitfire, its delta shape as instantly recognizable as the howling noise it makes when the engines are opened for takeoff. Vulcan Boys is the first book about this bomber recounted completely firsthand by the operators themselves. It tells the story of the aircraft from its design conception through the Cold War, when it played out its most important job as Britain’s nuclear deterrent; it also reveals the significant role its bombs and missiles played in liberating the Falkland Islands, for which it gained much celebrity. These individual accounts detail how hours at a time were spent waiting to be scrambled to defend the country in the event of a third world war, and how pilots’ aggressive skills were honed by carrying out Lone Ranger sorties flying to the United States and westward around the world, and taking part in Giant Voice and Red Flag, competitive exercises against the US Strategic Air Command. The attacks in the Falklands using Shrike missiles are described accurately and in great detail for the first time, including the landing at Rio de Janeiro alongside a vivid account of Black Buck 2. Vulcan Boys is a fascinating and completely authentic read reminding us of the Cold War, how it was fought, and the considerable effort required to prevent all-out nuclear war.

Daniel Ford learned to fly at the age when most of us are well into retirement. In this short book, he tells how it was to have a flight instructor one-third his age, to make a Sentimental Journey to the Pennsylvania airport where the Piper Cub first saw the light of day, to practice spins and aerobatic turns in a Great Lakes biplane, to fly low and slow in New Jersey, to make a leisurely tour around the Big Lake and into his past, and to have a close encounter with the National Defense Emergency of September 11, 2001. A delightful read for anyone who ever dreamed of becoming a pilot. Illustrated; about 11,000 words.
