Excerpt from Social Forces in American History It has seemed to me that these underlying social forces are of more importance than the individuals that were forced to the front in the process of these struggles, or even than the laws that were established to record the results of the con ict. In short, I have tried to describe the dynamics of history rather than to record the ac complished facts, to answer the question, Why did it happen? As well as, What happened? An inquiry into causes is manifestly a greater task than the recording of accomplished facts. It is certain that I have made some mistakes, probably a great many, in analyzing the underlying forces of so complex a thing as American social development. The finding of such mis takes will prove nothing as to the method save that the leisure of ten very busy years in the life of one individual is all too short a time in which to trace to their origin the multitude of forces that have been operating in Amer ican history. Excerpt from An American History Besides bringing the narrative down to the spring months of the year. 1920, the author has e'ntirely recast that part of the book fol lowing the Spanish War, and has made considerable changes in the preceding chapters. The changes are chiefly in the direction of added emphasis on social and economic factors in our history. New illustrative material has been added, the maps have been improved, and the bibliographical references brought down to date. The author takes this occasion to express his hearty thanks to many of his fellow teachers of American history throughout the country for their friendly criticisms and helpful suggestions. Excerpt from Organized Labor in American History History is concerned with more than the mere perfunctory cataloguing of incidents; with more than a string of events held together by the color less thread of chronology. It is no longer to be considered solely as a record of sanguinary episodes and of individual prowess or debauchery. True his tory presents a fascinating picture Of conflicting races, interests, sections and classes; it tells the in teresting story of the struggle of the masses up ward toward equality Of Opportunity. Historical science, therefore, is a study of cause and effect. In the realm of physics, chemistry or engineering, changes in the structure, form or content of mate rials take place in consequence of the application of power or of heat, or because Of some other modi fication in the conditions affecting the materials. Likewise, in the political or the social sphere, strue tures or institutions such as, for example, the state. Excerpt from History of the United States In the next place we have omitted all descriptions of battles. Our reasons for this are simple. The strategy of a campaign or of a single battle is a highly technical, and usually a highly controversial, matter about which experts differ widely. In the field of military and naval operations most writers and teachers of history are mere novices. To dispose of Gettys burg or the Wilderness in ten lines or ten pages is equally ab surd to the serious student of military affairs. Any one who compares the ordinary textbook account of a single Civil War campaign with the account given by Ropes, for instance, will ask for no further comment. No youth called upon to serve our country in arms would think of turning to a high school manual for information about the art of warfare. The dra matic scene or episode, so useful in arousing the interest of the immature pupil, seems out of place in a book that deliberately appeals to boys and girls on the very threshold of life's serious responsibilities. It is not upon negative features, however, that we rest our case. It is rather upon constructive features. First. We have written a topical, not a narrative, history. We have tried to set forth the important aspects, problems, and movements of each period, bringing in the narrative rather by way of illustration. Second. We have emphasized those historical topics which help to explain how our nation has come to be what it is to-day. Third. We have dwelt fully upon the social and economic aspects of our history, especially in relation to the politics of each period. Fourth. We have treated the causes and results of wars, the problems of financing and sustaining armed forces, rather than military strategy. These are the subjects which belong to a history for civilians. These are matters which civilians can understand matters which they must understand, if they are to play well their part in war and peace. Fifth. By omitting the period of exploration, we have been able to enlarge the treatment of our own time. We have given special attention to the history of those current ques tions which must form the subject matter of sound instruo tion in citizenship.
