Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Sociology - Children and Youth, grade: 4.0, Smith College, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study was to answer the following question: How do young adults who are avid social networking site (SNS) users build and maintain interpersonal relationships? I became curious about young adults’ perceptions of the ways in which social networking sites play a role in their ability to build and maintain interpersonal relationships. As young adults continue to increase the amount of time they spend on social media websites, it is important to explore their types of involvement in social media and their ability to create meaningful online or offline relationships. A national poll conducted by the Common Sense Media found that young adults log on to their favorite social media sites more than ten times per day. This gives evidence that a large part of social and emotional development is occurring on the Internet. This study offers a deeper understanding of the experiences of young adults’ SNS usage and their ability to initiate and maintain interpersonal relationships. As young adults continue to increase the amount of time spent on SNS they are affected either positively or negatively, which may have some effect on their ability to create meaningful relationships.

As peer victimization is a peer experiences that connects to psychological adjustment in high school students, this study explores how social competence offline and online may mediate this relationship. High school participants (n =303, Mage= 15.83) reported about their peer victimization experiences, social skills online and offline, perceptions of peers' acceptance offline and social media acceptance, social media behaviors, and psychological adjustment. Results indicate that overall, teens' who experience peer victimization are likely to have deficits in their offline and online social competence and use aspects of social media in different ways. However, the pathways between online social competence and social media behaviors do not support mediation of the relationship between peer victimization and psychological adjustment. Also, the use of sociometric methods to measure peer processes on social media shows potential as an informative method. Since teens are interacting with social media as another context of their everyday life and as an important context of peer socialization, the implications for targets of peer victimization are meaningful.

The Digital Gap: An Exploration of Social and Emotional Aspects of Adolescent Behavior Online and Offline Julia M. Walsh Doctor of Philosophy Temple University, 2015 Major Advisor: Frank Farley, PhD Access to the Internet and the use of social networking sites are commonplace activities for modern day adolescents. This part of life is a crucial time of growth based in the development of identity and meaningful peer relationships and peer group affiliations. With the growing popularity of social networking sites comes both negative and positive outcomes for teens' social and emotional functioning, which ultimately impacts the advancement of psychosocial autonomy. This study is designed to help parents and educators understand the social and emotional facets of adolescent behavior in the online and offline settings as they provide guidance, support, and direction to teens as well as develop educational programs that address teens and technology. The study examines various aspects of social and emotional functioning among adolescents in three social settings: in school, outside of school, and on social networking sites. The features of social and emotional functioning that are examined include: personal outcomes of social situations, communication about risk behavior, reactions to mean and cruel behavior, and affective and conative functioning. In addition, the extent to which teens report possessing thrill-seeking personality characteristics is also measured. The relationship between these variables is investigated through self-report data, gathered through a questionnaire, and provided by 117 students at a suburban high school outside of Philadelphia, PA. Results of the study suggest that, in general, adolescents' personal outcomes of social experiences, communication about risk behaviors, and reactions to mean and cruel behavior appear to occur substantially more often during social activities outside of school in contrast to in school or on a social networking site. With respect to personal experiences, adolescents report having generally positive experiences more often than negative experiences across all three settings. With regard to communication about risk behaviors, teens report talking about alcohol, drugs, sex, and tobacco more often during social activities outside of school than in school or on a social networking site. Adolescents also report communicating significantly more often about sex and alcohol and to a lesser extent drugs, in contract to tobacco use. In relation to reactions to mean and cruel behavior, the teens in this sample report that they are significantly more likely to defend the victim, ignore the situation, or tell the person to stop rather than join in the harassment. Teens are significantly more likely to engage in these reactions to mean and cruel behavior during social activities outside of school and in school in contrast to time spent on a social networking site. Little information was discerned regarding affective and conative functioning. Finally, thrill seeking (i.e. Type T personality traits) were less associated with risk- taking behavior and more associated with social responses to mean and cruel behavior. It is important to note limitations of this research regarding the sample, such as racial make-up and gender distribution, as well as with respect to sampling and the tool of measurement. Nonetheless, this study provides valuable insight into the developmental period of adolescence and how it is impacted by advancements in technology, particularly as these changes relate to socialization. Parents, educators, researchers, and policy makers must be aware of the differences that exist between the physical and virtual settings for teens. Results from this study will inform parents and educators about the factors most associated with psychosocial development for adolescents in today's world. These findings, in conjunction with findings from previous research, will provide support for ways to communicate with teens about pertinent features of social and emotional functioning as well as inform the development of new educational programs to train parents and students on the purpose, use, and advantages and disadvantages of online communication.

Digital communication and social networking sites (e.g., Facebook) have become an integral part of adolescent and young adults' daily life. The increasing presence of an online context raises concerns as to how digital communication influences our interpersonal relationships. The social well-being of adolescents is central to this issue particularly because they are the defining users of online communication platforms. Research has increasingly focused on how youth may engage social networking sites in the service of developmental needs. The current research investigated social network activity and indicators of well-being in a sample of University students who engage in Facebook use. In addition, this research has sought to extend previous research and examine the relationship between perceptions of social support across online and offline contexts. Participants reported on the types of Facebook activities they engage in, as well as their perceived levels of stress, loneliness and social support. The results suggest that the type of Facebook activity is an important factor when considering the relationship between social media use and emerging adults' well-being. The discussion will focus on the potential positive and negative ways that emerging adults are engaging in social networking sites. The implications of this study can be used to inform future research as well as education initiatives for emerging adults.

Adolescents spend much of their time using the internet and electronic media. Since its inception, the use of online social networking (OSN) sites by adolescents continues to grow. With the proliferation of OSN, it is critical to examine how this activity affects psychological development, but better measurement tools are needed. As researchers struggle to keep up with this rapidly growing field, many gaps remain in the literature investigating the interrelations between adolescent's OSN use and mental health outcomes. Research examining the relationship between OSN and mental health outcomes, specifically depression and anxiety, has produced mixed results suggesting that other factors influence this association. A large research literature documents associations between attachment and mental health. Given that attachment also affects interpersonal communication, several studies have investigated links between attachment and OSN use in adult and college populations. Results indicated that even though attachment to father was independently related to anxiety and depression symptoms, it was not a significant moderator for mental health and OSN. Attachment to mother was a significant moderator for anxiety and depression and several OSN subscales. Based on this information, a greater focus on youth's interpersonal connection and social skills both online and offline may be beneficial when treating adolescents experiencing anxiety or depression.
