Recording technologies shaped the sound and meaning of 20th-century folk music in Britain, constructing a sonic aesthetics of authenticity in an era of rapid technological and social transformation. The folk revival that changed the sound of 20th century British popular music was sustained by a varied and innovative recording culture. For many listeners, the sound of folk on record presented a 'real' sound in an age of studio artifice, asserting the value of face-to-face performance over technologically mediated consumption. At the same time, the folk movement benefitted from rapid advances in recording and media technology, encompassing a range of sonic practices including radio documentary, commercial studio production and field recording. Within the revival as a cultural movement, recordings and the act of recording itself reflected and shaped the meaning of the music for musicians and their audiences as they developed new aesthetic practices and explored the expressive potential of recorded sound. Sound Recording in Post-War British Folk traces how folk's recording culture was shaped by beliefs about music, technology and society, becoming a key site for the articulation of aesthetic, cultural and political values. Ord brings together theoretical approaches from musicology, social semiotics and science and technology studies and draws upon interviews with musicians and producers to explore the place of recording in 20th-century folk and popular music and raise larger questions about the relationship between music, recording technologies and cultural-political movements.

Widespread file sharing has led content industries – publishers and distributors of books, music, films, and software – to view their customers as growing threats to their survival. Content providers and their allies, especially the U.S. government, have pushed for stronger global copyright policies through international treaties and domestic copyright reforms. Internet companies, individuals, and public-interest groups have pushed back, with massive street protests in Europe and online “internet blackouts” that derailed the 2012 U.S. Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). But can citizens or smaller countries really stand in the way of the U.S. copyright juggernaut? To answer this question, Copyfight examines the 1996 World Intellectual Property Organization internet treaties that began the current digital copyright regime. Blayne Haggart follows the WIPO treaties from negotiation to implementation from the perspective of three countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Using extensive interviews with policymakers and experts in these three countries, Haggart argues that not all the power is in the hands of the U.S. government. Small countries can still set their own course on copyright legislation, while growing public interest in copyright issues means that even the United States might move away from ever-increasing copyright protection.

In Canada, the audio-visual and print industries are referred to as the cultural industries, whereas the United States calls them the entertainment industries. These language distinctions are accompanied by different domestic policies and political discourses. The United States has relatively open policies toward these activities, while Canada has adopted an inward-looking approach. Failure to integrate cultural industries into NAFTA and WTO has led to trade disputes between Canada and the United States over copyrights, television licensing, violence in media, and discriminatory magazine policy, indicating the need for an agreed-upon process for settling cultural trade disputes. Much Ado about Culture explores the differing sets of policies--cultural nationalism versus the open option--and the resulting conflicts in the context of technological developments as well as international agreements dealing with trade, investment, copyright, and labor movements. The Canadian cultural industries are examined, from film and television production and distribution to broadcasting, publishing, and sound recording. Several areas of recent conflict, such as Sports Illustrated, Country Music Television, and Borders Books, highlight the types of policies disputed, the process followed, and the conclusions reached. Finally, the authors propose an alternative approach to constraining national cultural policies by international agreement that would allow the gains from openness to be realized while serving legitimate cultural concerns. Authored by the acknowledged experts on trade disputes in the cultural arena, this book will be essential reading for international economists, policymakers, and lawyers interested in the cultural industries. Keith Acheson and Christopher Maule are Professors of Economics, Carleton University, Ontario.
