Excerpt from Social Studies in English Literature The unity Of the following studies consists in their common viewpoint, each essay tracing the relation between a certain body of literature and some aspects Of the social conditions out of which it grew. This unity Of idea is due to no attempt to illustrate the now generally accepted theory that literature is essentially social in nature and function, but results solely from the pedestrian effort to see the Object as in itself it really is. In the history Of the essay and in the English poetry of the Revolu tion the connection between literature and life on which the criticism Of our day emphatically insists is so Obvious that it seems impossible to come to a full understanding either of this art-form or of these poets without recognizing the social affili ations Of each. Excerpt from Problems in American Society: Some Social Studies To one attentive to the signs of the times, it is evident that a profound change is passing over the world of modem thought. In politics, economic questions are coming to the front; in literature, discussions of social problems are crowding aside the purely aesthetic creations; and in the church there is a growing tendency to ignore dogmas and to engage in the humanities. As we look along the book-shelves filled with recent publications, we see a profusion of works upon all phases of social science; as we glance at the topics upon which college graduates expend their enthusiasm, we find that these living issues outrank all purely academic themes; and, as we listen to the commingled voices of this practical and earnest age, we notice that the trumpet tones come from those who are pleading for some reform or urging some philanthropy. And it is well. Humanity is greater than any of its institutions, and it becomes the modern man to adjust his agencies to the work which he has to do. Nothing but good can come from a free discussion of all our social machinery. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sentiments and Activities: Essays in Social Science Jin a volume of collected essays a reader will beless conscious in uences, I shall explain the scattering of my subjects by giving, as well as I can at this late date, the more obvious reasons why I took them up and why I pursued them as I did. The reasons were seldom what the picture of an ideal scientist says they should have been. Often they were opportunistic, designed to advance a career rather than a discipline, often intensely personal rather than dictated by a reasoned appraisal of what was best worth doing in the field; and often matters of chance, in the sense that the choice could not easily have been predicted ahead of time. I should be more ashamed of myself if I thought that many others had let themselves be dominated by the mere ux of circumstance less often than I have. Excerpt from New Amsterdam and Its People: Studies, Social and Topographical, of the Town Under Dutch and Early English Rule It is perhaps unfortunate, in some respects, that Washington Irving chose to employ his great talents in writing the amusing "Knickerbocker History" of New York. A burlesque history of New York does not seem to be called for per se, any more than a burlesque history of the Plymouth Colony, and the presentation of a fictitious type of the colonists of the former is calculated to work the same sort of inconveniences as would the selection, for example, of Colonel Pride or of Praise-God Barebones as a type of the latter. Readers of such works are supposed, it is true, to bear in mind the fact that they are considering the humorous descriptions of non-existent characters; but when for any reason the work becomes almost a classic, as it were, of the literature of the country, the type therein portrayed passes insensibly in the popular mind into something like the embodiment of truth. The superficial American who travels in England, or the superficial Englishman who travels in America, when he writes a book about his travels, is apt to set forth the few people he has chanced to meet as representatives of national types of character. Both of these worthies are even more prone to do the same thing when they travel in a foreign country with the tongue of which they are of necessity but imperfectly acquainted, but in such cases their performances usually fall beneath the dignity of criticism. No community, however, can be rightly judged in this manner, for in each one are to be found traits of character almost as diverse and distinct as are the individuals who compose it. New York is no exception to this rule. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Joseph Hergesheimer, the Man and His Books The salient fact about Joseph Hergesheimer is that he cannot be predicted. While his fellow American novelists - and the majority of his English fellows, too run in orderly grooves, make social studies of labour, the church, or what not, Mr. Hergesheimer, intent only upon those passions and colours that appeal to the heart and that may be found everywhere, wanders where he lists. He refuses to impoverish the soil of any one field of human life by too continuous planting. And perhaps that fact is not unconnected with the fact that Mr. Hergesheimer is the only contemporary American novelist who is treated by English critics with out their two most usual manners toward American novelists: patronage or a very curt nod in passing. From Edmund Gosse down the English critics find him important as well as exciting: they forget that he is a foreigner.
