Emma by Jane Austen is a novel about a 21-year-old girl living in the small town of Highbury, Surrey, in England. The novel deals with the relationships between the neighbours, the class differences and, typical for Jane Austen novels, marriage and match- making. The characters in this novel may not be as highly-drawn as the ones in Pride and Prejudice are, but it "delineates with great accuracy the manners and the habits of a middle class gentry" (Gentleman ́s Magazine in September 1816: Lodge 1972: 46), and thus Emma is convenient to be a source for research for typical habits. In this paper, the aspects of family life, neighbourhood, manners and values in Emma (and thus representatively for the English Regency period) are to be portrayed.

Emma Woodhouse is rich, intelligent, artistic, happy...and bored. Her governess married, her father is widowed and occupied with his own irregular health issues and his own feelings and his own consolations. Emma, though charming and clever, is restless and impatient. Because of her monetary and social resources she attempts to restructure the life of her poor friend Harriet Smith by presenting her as a cultured woman who would be suitable marriage material to those of Emma's own social environment. Harriet, however, is acquaintanced by farmers and does not know her real parents, so her acceptability by Emma's group is questionable. Emma is intrusive and patronizing enough to offer Harriet to Emma's lofty community where Harriet is shy and afraid to insist on her own preferences. Instead she permits Emma these introductions. Nr. Knightly, a longtime neighbor of Emma and her father, sees a fault in the relationship between Emma and Harriet: Harriet overpraises Emma's choices and gives in to her worst temperaments. Emma's imperious hold on events and behaviors threatens to choke everyone involved until she is shown her mistakes and is saved from social catastrophe by Mr. Knightly. Emma begins to understand that she is spoiled and self-centered enough to only listen to her own opinion. Then she starts to forsake her condescending spirit and to become a better companion to her friends. She is also willing to admit her weakness at organizing the lives of others and to rearrange her priorities so that satisfaction with her own life becomes more important than governing the affairs of everyone else. Most of her novels affirm the presence of an orderly society and its entrenched values. She valued universal and fundamental conventions such as consideration for others, good principles, and good judgement. In the novel Emma, Jane Austen demonstrates great concern for the stability of old values in the rapidly changing Highbury society. Her world comprises the traditional feudal systems with the landowners and yeomanry undergoing a transitional phase in its social structure. The community faces a new rising middle-class sector, which makes its money utilizing business and trade and would like the prestige of the gentry’s class. The new class also threatens the traditional hierarchy of the old gentry. The gentry’ class is the custodian of gentility and it must always observe the code for the sake of order. As such, Austen’s heroine Emma, of the old gentry is one of the dominating figures in the novel; who ultimately reconciles to her leadership position in society and her role as an exemplary female. In this society, the value placed on gentility seems to exceed that of property and love. The value associated with love is subtly underrated as compared to the values of gentility and property. The pivotal events of the novel concern the marriage of young women to men and in this regard, the integration of the values of property, gentility, and love, is of prime importance. A perfect union forms only when these three values coalesce between the couple. There is sometimes much ambiguity in assessing the relative importance of these values to the author, as Austen unfolds unobtrusively several points of view in the novel.

Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of the British Regency. What has Emma Woodhouse, "handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and very little to distress or vex her" to say to a discipline like philosophy? How is a novel like Emma, inaccurately but not infrequently caricatured as a high-toned version of a pedestrian romance, to supply material for philosophical insight or speculation? Jane Austen's Emma is many things to many readers but it is as inaccurate as it is reductive to consider it just a romance. The minutia of daily living on which it concentrates permit not a rehearsal of platitudes, but a closer look at human emotions and motives, as well as the opportunity to hone our interpretive and empathetic skills. Emma flies in the face of conventional notions of femininity by presenting a heroine with hubris. It shows how friendships can affect one's ways of dealing with the world, how shame can reconfigure self-understanding, how gossip functions in sustaining a community. Emma rehabilitates conceptions of romance by rejecting melodrama in favor of naturalism. It explores the waywardness of the imagination and the myriad ways in which different people with different biases and agendas may evaluate the same evidence. It dwells on the limits of autonomy in that it explores the ease with which one may submit to the will of another. Emma is not itself a work of philosophy.
