In recent decades, the problem of evil in human affairs has often been explained exclusively in terms of social maladjustment, personal mental disorders, or faulty societal structures. The essays in this volume present a needed interdisciplinary and ecumenical approach to current social problems by exploring the roots of human sinfulness and thereby reopening the discussion of the fall of man. In their preface, the editors observe that ôneither frantic alarm over the worldÆs crises, nor the many prescriptions for their cure, can have much point apart from a clear diagnosis of what is fundamentally wrong with the human condition. In the Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions at least, no notion has functioned as pivotally and inclusively in pointing to the core of human derangement as has sin. To inquire after the source of sin is, however, to raise the question of original sin, an idea that has in fact always been inseparable from the web of human interrelationships.ö For the specialist and layman, this volume offers a distinctive range of approaches to contemporary moral and social problems, including contributions from Black and feminist points of view.

Original Sin written by Alan Jacobs and has been published by Harper Collins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-10-13 with Religion categories.

Essayist and biographer Alan Jacobs introduces us to the world of original sin, which he describes as not only a profound idea but a necessary one. As G. K. Chesterton explains, "Only with original sin can we at once pity the beggar and distrust the king." Do we arrive in this world predisposed to evil? St. Augustine passionately argued that we do; his opponents thought the notion was an insult to a good God. Ever since Augustine, the church has taught the doctrine of original sin, which is the idea that we are not born innocent, but as babes we are corrupt, guilty, and worthy of condemnation. Thus started a debate that has raged for centuries and done much to shape Western civilization. Perhaps no Christian doctrine is more controversial; perhaps none is more consequential. Blaise Pascal claimed that "but for this mystery, the most incomprehensible of all, we remain incomprehensible to ourselves." Chesterton affirmed it as the only provable Christian doctrine. Modern scholars assail the idea as baleful and pernicious. But whether or not we believe in original sin, the idea has shaped our most fundamental institutions—our political structures, how we teach and raise our young, and, perhaps most pervasively of all, how we understand ourselves. In Original Sin, Alan Jacobs takes readers on a sweeping tour of the idea of original sin, its origins, its history, and its proponents and opponents. And he leaves us better prepared to answer one of the most important questions of all: Are we really, all of us, bad to the bone?

A Law From Eden written by Marilyn Taplin and has been published by Archway Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-08 with Religion categories.

Both John the Baptist and Jesus said, Behold, the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Yet we know that heaven will only come when sin ends. Therefore, humankind needs to know which sin removed us from the first paradise Eden. In A Law from EdenSolving the Mystery of Original Sin, author Marilyn Taplin looks to the Bible to show that the true original sin is not pride or the seeking of knowledge about good and evil; rather, she shows that the true original sin is an act of sexual perversion. A misunderstanding of human sexuality has led to this morally wicked society, and biblical research shows how sexual acts originating in ancient pagan societies and now found in contemporary LGBT communities have distorted the way even those professing to be Christians view their own sexuality. Many believe that the world is moving in the wrong direction, and Jesus shows us how to reverse that direction and bring Eden to the earth once again. If those professing to be Christians learn the powerful truth about original sin and end this sexual act, then they will be able to help usher in the heaven on earth promised by God.

Othering written by Charles K. Bellinger and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-28 with Religion categories.

Othering is a word used in academic circles, but it may be unfamiliar to many laypersons. This work introduces the word, which is a refined way of describing prejudice, discrimination, and scapegoating. The book addresses what othering is, how it has been practiced in varied contexts, and how it prepares the way for violence. Dimensional anthropology is introduced, which is the idea that there are three main dimensions of reality as it is inhabited by human beings: the vertical axis (the Great Chain of Being), the horizontal plane (society), and individual selfhood. Othering can be present within all three of these dimensions, with slavery being an example of vertical axis othering, ethnic violence being an example of horizontal othering, and lone wolf or psychotic shooters being an example of individual othering. The most thought-provoking aspect of the book for many readers will be its application to the culture wars in our current individualistic age. Rights language is also addressed at length, since it can function as anti-othering rhetoric or as rhetoric that supports othering. The largest framework for the book is its argument that othering is a way of illuminating what the theological tradition has understood as original sin.

This book takes as its main thesis: (1) the Christian doctrine of sin is offensive to the reason and repelled by the intelligentsia and academia; (2) without this doctrine of sin much of human life and history remains forever opaque; (3) with it a shaft of light is cast upon personal existence, social existence, and the course of history, giving clarity that nothing else in the religions, nor the philosophies, of the world can provide.

Excerpt from The Great Christian Doctrine of Original Sin Defended, Evidences of It's Truth Produced, and Arguments to the Contrary Answered As the Rev. Author of the following Piece has been removed by Death, before its coming into public View, Custom has made it decent to introduce it with a prefatory Page. The Copy he brought to the Press sometime the last Year, and a Number of Sheets passed his own Review. But a Variety of Incidents retarded finishing the Work till now. - It is hoped, no material Mistakes of the Printer have escaped Correction, besides what are noticed in the Table of Errata. They that were acquainted with the Author, or know his just Character, & have any Taste for the serious Theme, will want Nothing to be said in Recommendation of the ensuing Tract, but only that Mr. Edwards wrote it. Several valuable Pieces on this Subject, have lately been published, upon the fame Side of the Question. But he had no Notice of so much as the very first of them, till he had wholly concluded what he had in View: nor has it been thought, any Thing already printed mould supersede this Work of his; being designed on a more extensive Plan; comprising a Variety of Arguments, and Answers to many Objections, that fell not in the Way of the other worthy Writers; and the Whole done with a Care of familiar Method and Language as well as clear Reasoning, in general accommodated very much to common Capacities. It must be a sensible Pleasure to every Friend of Truth, that so masterly a Hand undertook a Reply to Dr. Taylor; notwithstanding the various Answers already given him, both at home and abroad.
