This study identifies and discusses sociodemographic structures, processes and trends that entail risks for individuals, households and communities in the small island developing States of the Caribbean, on the basis of the analysis of the environmental, geographical, economic and institutional vulnerability of these States conducted by ECLAC in the document Equity, development and citizenship, which was presented at the twenty-eighth session of the Commission. The analysis focuses on three sociodemographic issues. First, fertility, which continues to occur early and at high rates among poor groups of the population and entails pronounced gender inequalities, especially for female heads of household who are required to undertake the responsibility of bringing up children. Second, population ageing, which is fairly advanced in a number of the Caribbean islands and calls for carefully planned measures. Third, migration ?in particular of the international type? which reaches very high levels in some of the region's countries. Migration offers opportunities for individuals and households, but it also drains part of the skilled labour force from the countries of the Caribbean and exposes migrants, in particular the least skilled, to discriminatory and unfair treatment. The document concludes with policy guidelines for addressing these issues, which together comprise the sociodemographic vulnerability of the Caribbean.

Author's abstract: This research explored 102 Illinois counties' COVID-19 data to determine whether demographic characteristics and social vulnerability are associated with increased vulnerability to COVID-19 infections and deaths. COVID-19 is disproportionately impacting vulnerable groups and has been deadlier for African American and Hispanic people. The findings of this research will contribute to the knowledge base regarding social vulnerability and assist public health officials in targeting resources and designing interventions. This study used a retrospective cross-sectional design to assess demographic characteristics of race, gender, ethnicity, and social vulnerability to the increased likelihood of COVID-19 infections and deaths. Multiple regression was performed to assess COVID-19 outcomes with race, ethnicity, and gender. Results of the study found a positive association for COVID-19 infections with race, gender, minority status, poverty level, per capita income, children 17 and younger, disability status, and multi-unit housing. Results of the study also found positive associations for COVID-19 deaths in race, gender, minority status, English proficiency, poverty level, per capita income, children 17 and younger, households with a disability, and multi-unit housing.

Vulnerabilities And Resiliency Of The Coastal People In The Bangladesh written by Sohela Mustari and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Satkhira (Bangladesh) categories.

This study aims at investigating the household experiences of the people in southwestern coastal areas of Bangladesh, mainly in a village called Napitkhali. Based on empirical data collected at the village level, the research analyzes their vulnerabilities and resilient capacities against several natural disasters. By employing Risk Society Theory (RST) of Ulrich Beck (1992), the analysis developed mostly three main thematic experiences. These are vulnerability, resiliency, and finally focusing on the difference in the level of vulnerability and resiliency. From the methodological point of view, the study relied heavily on qualitative methods for collecting data. In addition, a small survey was conducted to provide the demographic information, making the study holistic in nature. The findings focused on different major sub-themes related to vulnerabilities due to natural disasters by revealing that these vulnerabilities are manifested centrally under livelihood options and other social necessities of everyday life. In the later section, it shows that despite facing continuous vulnerabilities, the villagers have the capacities to get rid of them through finding proper alternatives. The last part of the research findings exposes that both vulnerability and resilient strategies are embedded by the socio-demographic factors which are significant in creating differences in the level of vulnerability and resiliency of the villagers. The discussion part of the thesis primarily reveals that the RST of Ulrich Beck is mostly true for these villagers of Napitkhali. However, the theory is modified slightly as the discussion establishes that both the vulnerabilities and the alternative mechanisms are dynamic processes for these villagers based on their socio-demographic characteristics.

Law Normative Pluralism And Post Disaster Recovery written by Vivencio O. Ballano and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-14 with Social Science categories.

This book looks at how the multiplicity of formal and informal normative systems that actualize the post-disaster recovery goals of the country’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010 has resulted in the inadequate housing and relocation of Typhoon Ketsana victims in the Philippines. Using the sociological and normative pluralist perspectives and the case study method, it evaluates the level of conformity of the components of the housing project according to international conventions and legal standards. It highlights the negative unintended consequences caused by the complex normative regimes of various competing stakeholders, rigid real estate regulation, and the unscrupulous involvement of powerful and ‘corrupt’ real estate developers and housing groups as largely contributing to the project’s deviation from the law’s proactive objectives. This book attempts to promote the socio-legal perspectives which have long been overlooked in disaster research. Finally, it invites policymakers to enact a comprehensive disaster law and create a one-stop disaster management agency to improve the long-term rehabilitation of disaster victims in developing countries such as the Philippines.

Vulnerability Risks And Complexity written by International Association for People-Environment Studies. Conference and has been published by Hogrefe & Huber Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Biotic communities categories.

This volume offers state of the art research on the interrelations between the social, the built, and the natural environment. It encompasses papers investigating human habitats in a variety of settlement structures within several natural settings that are affected by negative impacts of extreme weather events, natural hazards, infectious diseases, contaminations, or crime. Further, it provides empirical case studies describing ways to strengthen environmentally-sound behavior and how people behave in very specific living conditions, e.g. in post-disaster settlements. The focus of the book is on the necessity of studying vulnerability, risks, and complexity as expressions of the major impacts of global change on human habitats. These include not only climate and hazard impacts but also new socio-demographic trends and regional economic developments influencing people's quality of life and their capacities to cope with global change. The book will be useful to scholars in cross-cutting areas of urban, hazard, planning, governance and sustainability research in strong relation to socio-psychological perspectives. The readers benefit from new theoretical as well as empirically based research findings in the emerging field of social-science vulnerability studies.

To The Southwest Corner written by Rebecca Lynn Hoffman and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Tornadoes categories.

The origins of modern common tornado myths can be traced back as far as the late nineteenth century. Since 1950, forecasting technology has evolved quickly and efficiently; in 1950 tornadoes came with little to no warning, and presently people can be warned as much as 24 hours in advance of an impending storm. However, the year 2011 produced the third largest death toll on record. Educating the public is a daunting task when information is constantly changing, especially when the public has pre-conceived notions which may stem from tornado myths. This study focused on the socio-demographic factors behind these myths in an effort to become aware of which parts of the population need to be re-educated on safety practices. Surveys were sent to random home addresses in four U.S. metropolitan areas. The results from a series of chi-square tests revealed associations between gender and the belief that tornadoes are less likely to strike cities or near bodies of water. The tests also revealed association between gender and the perceived regions in which people believe tornadoes occur most often. Finally, the tests revealed association between location of residence and the perceived regions in which people believe tornadoes occur. While these were significant results, it is difficult to target re-education by gender and location alone. It can be concluded that the general public would benefit greatly from re-education in a manner which not only reaches the masses, but from a method in which they are able to easily retain the information.
