Population ageing in now widely recognised as a major feature of demographic trernds in the countries of Europe and North America. This report begins with a broad presentation of the demographic trends and soci-economic context in Switzerland. Of a population of 7.1 million in 1997 nearly a million are over 65. An examination of family demography as shown by living arrangements finds a great increase in the number of small households illustrating decreased family size, increased life expectancy, and a growing divorce rate. Trends in age at retirement, economic activity after 60, and the prospects for the pension scheme are considered. The well-being of older people and the challenge for the health system in dealing with the growing number of the elderly complete this survey.
