When originally published in 1975, (here re-issuing the 3rd edition of 1985), this was the only genuinely introductory textbook to the subject of transportation planning. The introductory chapter places the issue of transport in its broader societal context, relating it to demographic, socio-economic, political and environmental considerations. The increasing importance of technology is recognized in the chapter which covers commonly used software packages. As a whole the book provides a basic introduction to the traffic estimation stage of the transport planning process and forms a general guide and survey to the whole subject.

Transportation planning plays a useful role as a lifeline for any society. It comprises applications of science and art, where a great deal of judgement coupled with its technical elements is required to arrive at a meaningful decision in order to develop transportation infrastructure facilities for the community. Transportation planning, thereby, helps in achieving a safer, faster, comfortable, convenient, economical and environment-friendly movement of people and goods traffic. In this context, an attempt has been made to write a comprehensive book on this subject, which not only deals with the basic principles and fundamentals of transportation planning but also keeps abreast of the current practices and policies conducted in transportation planning. Divided into 23 chapters, the book felicitously proffers the fundamental techniques of transportation planning and travel demand modelling, urban form and urban structure and their relation with transport pattern, land use-transport model, accessibility and mobility consideration in transport modelling, graph theory and road network planning, cost benefit analysis, mass transport planning, applications of intelligent transport system, applications of software in transport planning, and transport policies. Exploiting a systematic approach avoiding prolixity, this book will prove to be a vade mecum for the undergraduate and postgraduate students of civil engineering and transportation engineering. Besides, this book is of immense benefit to the students opting a course on Master of Planning conducted in various institutes. Highlights of the Book • Systematically organised concepts well-supported with ample illustrations • Prodigious illustrative figures and tables • Incorporates chapter-end summary to help in grasping the quirk concepts • Presents state-of-the-art data • Includes chapter-end review questions to help students prepare for examination

All the papers in this volume were presented at a conference on Transportation and Urban Life, held in Munich during the third week of September, 1975. The conference was sponsored by the Special Programme Panels on Systems Science and Human Factors of the Science Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. The distinguishing characteristic of the conference and of this volume lies in the combination of systems science and human factors contributions in the field of urban transportation. The initiative for attempting such a synthesis came from the sponsors. It is increasingly realised that the complexity of contemporary problems which applied scientists are being asked to solve is such that the coordinated efforts of several disciplines are needed to solve them. The brief which we formulated for the conference and distribu ted in our international call for papers was as follows: "The conference is intended to highlight significant psycho logical, SOCiological and economic aspects of transportation and urban life and to present new techniques which can be applied to these aspects and their interfaces". Papers were invited in four topic areas: Communities (transportation problems in relation to social needs, residential planning, industry and c0l1lITlerce) ; Cities and large urban areas (the econOlnic environment, material fl~l, resources); Regional development and transportation (administration and management at the project and multiprogramme level); and Quality of life and transportation (noise, visual intrusion, severance, air pollution).

This report describes the transportation planning process and discusses where and how environmental factors can be addressed effectively at the state and metropolitan levels. This report should be especially useful to federal, state department of transportation (DOT), metropolitan planning organization (MPO), and local transportation planners, as well as other practitioners concerned with addressing environmental factors within transportation systems planning, priority programming, and project development planning leading to implementation. The research focused on environmental issues within the long-range transportation planning processes of state DOTs and MPOs and included the following: (1) a comprehensive review of recent literature; (2) a survey of approaches employed by state DOTs, MPOs, and environmental regulatory agencies; (3) a review of federal regulations and guidance on environmental factors; and (4) case studies to synthesize current practice in environmental planning.

TRB's Transportation Research Record (TRR): Journal of the Transportation Research Board, No. 2452 consists of 14 articles that examine the impact of highway investment on the economy and employment across U.S. industrial sectors; the evolving connection of transit, agglomeration, and growth of high-technology business clusters; an analysis of socioeconomically disaggregated longitudinal employer-household dynamics data to understand commuting, job clusters, and travel burdens; the effect of accessibility on property prices; and the impact of bus rapid transit and metro rail on property values in Guangzhou, China. This TRR explores accessibility for low-income workers in New Orleans, Louisiana, after Hurricane Katrina; travel behavior of the poor after welfare reform; impact of attitudes and life stage on decline in rates of driver's license acquisition by young people in Melbourne, Australia; the use of a health impact assessment for transportation planning; and health impacts of transportation projects in an urban Indian context. Additionally, this TRR summarizes rural communities and transportation equity in California's San Joaquin Valley; workplace neighborhoods, walking, physical activity, weight status, and perceived health; dispersion modeling of traffic-related air pollutant exposures and health effects among children with asthma in Detroit, Michigan; mediators in the relationship between commute time and subjective well-being.
