Con il saggio di apertura di questo numero, la Rivista rende omaggio a Luciano Gallino, nell’imminenza del primo anniversario della sua scomparsa, con un intervento di Paola Borgna, sua allieva e collaboratrice per molti anni, che è riuscita nell’impresa di restituirci il senso più profondo della sua attività di scienziato. Un’attività caratterizzata da un estremo rigore concettuale, associato alla non comune capacità di guardare la realtà sociale mantenendo intatta sino alla fine la stessa vivacità, curiosità, passione degli esordi. Ciò che ha fatto di Gallino un acutissimo osservatore di tale realtà è stato il suo essere «uno scienziato schierato»: era schierato contro i costi umani e sociali impliciti nell’organizzazione economica, politica, culturale delle società contemporanee e, al tempo stesso, teso ad affermare un’immagine della sociologia come «progetto» scientifico che, nota l’autrice, «diventa democratico quando sottoponga i suoi risultati a prova di carattere realmente pubblico e collettivo », proponendosi, così, come un progetto di «autocoscienza sociale». Ed è un progetto senza fine, perché l’oggetto della sociologia è in continuo mutamento, proponendo sempre nuove sfide alla capacità della disciplina di produrre «conoscenze tali da permettere alla realtà sociale di comprendere se stessa».

Doing research is an ever-changing challenge for social scientists. This challenge is harder than ever today as current societies are changing quickly and in many, sometimes conflicting, directions.
