Nous sommes aujourd'hui confrontés à un bouleversement historique aussi déconcertant que révolutionnaire: l'invisibilisation de l'argent. L'objet de ce travail - le premier en sociologie à s'attaquer à cette problématique - est donc de s'interroger sur le double processus d'invisibilisation et de généralisation de l'argent, et de mettre en évidence ses conséquences sociales et culturelles. S'il y a un objet qui matérialise cet événement, c'est la carte monétaire. Le paiement se faisant de manière différée et comme indolore, l'ancien schème constitutif de nos pratiques sociales est sur le point d'être remplacé par d'étranges procédures à caractère technique, n'engageant plus notre réflexivité, mais une simple posture réactive.
