The rapid expansion of the tourism industry has provided many economic benefits and affected every facet of contemporary societies including employment, government revenue and cultural manifestations. However, tourism can also be considered a problematic phenomenon, promoting dependency, underdevelopment and adverse sociocultural effects, especially for developing countries. This pioneering work provides a comprehensive review of these complex tourism issues from a sociological perspective. Various theoretical and empirical approaches are introduced and the following issues are discussed: * identifiable and stable forms of touristic behaviour and roles * social divisions within tourism * the interdependence of tourism and social institutions * the effects of transnational tourism and commodification on the ecosystem. Featuring international contributions from nine different countries, this book brings together the most noted theoretical and empirical studies and enriches them with diverse experiences and perspectives.

There is abundant evidence of the quasi-total domination of the sociology and anthropology of tourism by academics from the English-speaking world. This title familiarises readers in the US, UK, Australia and the English speaking regions of Africa and Asia with such evolutionary thinking.

This collection of key articles from the most influential journals and books in the field examines what social scientists mean by the term tourism, and what it means to be a tourist. Carefully selected and introduced by the editor, this material charts the sociological changes that have occurred in tourism, and the change from the upper-class grand tours of the late nineteenth-century to the mass tourism of the present day. The collection also assesses the economic impacts of tourism on local economies, environmental considerations, and whether the growth of tourism is sustainable in a post-September 11th world. "Tourism: Critical Concepts in the Social Sciences" is an accessible and comprehensive resource designed for academics and scholars researching in tourism, globalization, and human geography.

Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Sociology - Economy and Industry, grade: B, University of Stavanger, language: English, abstract: Since tourism has been considered recently as a very significant issue to improve the social life, then few common social factors such as social control and autonomy have a massive impact in the tourism sector to develop it more. Therefore, couple of sociological themes has been highly influencing the hospitality and tourism sectors from the tourists perspective and as well as from the service provider perspective. So that, the social control and the autonomy, both factors are affecting and affected by the political, cultural, religious variety of various tourism locations. That is how, tourism is concerned as "...a language of social control in promotional material..." (Dann, 1996). In this work, I will be trying to discuss briefly and step by step some of the very specific aspects of social control and autonomy in the tourism sector, what are combined and gathered knowledge from the readings of sociology scholars in the tourism and social science study.

Tourism is a global phenomenon. Because it is an important, even vital, source of income for many countries in the world. Its importance was recognized in the Manila Declaration on World Tourism of 1980 as “an activity essential to the life of nations because of its direct effects on the social, cultural, educational, and economic sectors of national societies and on their international relations and its indirect effects on the development of allied industries like transport, hotel etc.”.Medical Tourism is one form of tourisms and which means a journey that patients take from one country to another country to get cost effective and efficient medical treatment, followed by a great vacation at some of the most beautiful locations. India is one of the major players in this industry. Currently, it hosts about 1.27 million medical tourists from industrialized countries like UK, USA and Canada and from its neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and China. Its foreign exchange earnings from medical tourism are estimated to be around US $ 1.8 billion. The estimated number of medial tourists in India in 2015 would be between 1.21 million and 2.78 million. The estimated revenue would lie between US $ 1719 million to US $ 3964 million in 2015. Medical tourism industry in India has potential to contribute around 25 percent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product in the next five years, if fully tapped. The present book titled Sociology of Medical Tourism highlights various dimensions, identifies different issues and suggests further development of this multimillion dollar industry in India in an in-depth manner. Medical Tourism is one of the most important trust areas which emerge in the past century and because of its multiple level of use it also become subject matter of research in various subjects including Sociology. It is hoped that this book, with its wide-ranging and in-depth content, critical insights and detailed analysis of the concept, prove to be immensely resourceful to the readers. I also assure that this book should be proven an informative referral for those who are working and doing research in the field of medical tourism.

`This book is one of several indications that the sociology of tourism is on the move.... these articles raise relevant important themes in the study of tourism.... The contributors to this very readable book provide valuable insights, many of which have been derived from empirical research, that should interest anyone involved in the study of international tourism. And by moving us away from polarised positions over the social impact of tourism toward more complex but also more considered perspectives they have also helped alter the agenda for future research′ - David Harrison, University of Sussex Tourism is becoming an increasingly prominent feature of contemporary life. More of us travel for pleasure than ever before, yet the social scientific literature on tourism is relatively scant. This book provides an original contribution to the field of tourist studies. The contributors to International Tourism reconceptualize the local and the global, avoiding such crude oppositions as centre v periphery, modern v traditional, macro v micro and North v South. Instead, they demonstrate that the local cannot be understood without the global, and that the global can never be isolated from the regional setting within which it operates. Providing new insights into theories of touristic practice, this volume places tourism within the same framework as other transnational global studies.

This timely and topical book presents a unique critical exploration of the sociology of single travel and theory of consumption in relation to loneliness and tourism. Logically structured and interdisciplinary in scope, this book introduces disrupting questions around the convergence of the post-modern self in relation to solo travel post-pandemic, with chapters exploring topics such as romantic loneliness, the benefits and drawbacks of single travel in a globalized world, the influence of technology on solo travel and the impact of sex tourism. International case studies and examples are given throughout and the book is richly illustrated and data-led. The volume looks to the future, exploring relevant trends and the development of new products and services in the next few years. This volume is a pivotal resource for students, scholars and academics with an interest in tourism and mobility studies, international relations, development economics, crisis management, sociology and public policy.
