Although the unique flora of the Socotra Archipelago with its high degree of endemism has received much attention recently, little information is available on the vegetation and related ecological aspects. Based on their extensive field experience of the region, the authors have assimilated a vast amount of knowledge to produce this book, which gives a detailed insight into the plant ecology of Socotra, designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008. The book is divided into seven chapters. After a brief introduction and overviews of important abiotic features, various aspects of the vascular flora are presented in Chapter 4, together with accounts of the bryophyte and lichen flora. Ecology and adaptive strategies of the plants are dealt with in Chapter 5, and Chapter 6 gives a concise description of the main vegetation units. Finally, important management issues of the vegetation are discussed, an essential topic to ensure preservation of the natural heritage of the archipelago.

This thought provoking book deals with religious scholarship and important controversies of the early modern period, specifically those relating to the question of the salvation of the pagans and the afterlife. Soqotra, strategisch gunstig an der Einfahrt zum Roten Meer gelegen, blickt auf uber zwei Jahrtausende bewegter, bislang nur durftig erforschter Geschichte zuruck. Mit dem Aufbluhen des Weihrauchhandels im Altertum begann die Einbindung der Insel in die Handelsnetzwerke Agyptens, Sudarabiens, Mesopotamiens, Persiens und Indiens. Seit der romischen Kaiserzeit existierte auf Soqotra (Dioskurides) eine griechische Kolonie, die sich bald zum Christentum bekehrte und uber die folgenden Jahrhunderte hinweg dem wachsenden Islamisierungsdruck in Sudarabien standhielt, dabei aber allmahlich aus dem Netzwerk der Ostkirche herausbrach und begann, eigene Wege zu gehen. Es entstand eine einzigartige Mischkultur, in der christliche Symbole zwar eine wichtige Rolle spielten, die zentralen Glaubensvorstellungen aber auf alteren, semitischen Traditionen beruhten. Auch die Bemuhungen der Portugiesen um eine Ruckfuhrung Soqotras unter die Obhut Roms im 16. Jahrhundert blieben vergeblich. Im Laufe der Fruhen Neuzeit schwand das Interesse des Westens an Soqotras Christen allmahlich, und andere Aspekte, so der Handel mit Aloe succotrina, die Bindung zum Jemen und die strategische Rolle im Kampf gegen das Osmanische Reich ruckten in den Vordergrund. In diesem Band wird erstmals die politische, wirtschaftliche und religiose Geschichte Soqotras seit den Anfangen bis zum 18. Jahrhundert anhand des gesamten greifbaren, teilweise handschriftlichen Quellenmaterials kritisch beleuchtet.
