Here are the stories of the earliest pioneers of North Dakota told by those who experienced the decades of the 1870s, 1880s, and 1890s. Recorded in the middle 1930s by interviewers working in a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, those who settled the land tell "the way it was" for them when they came to the frontier. Gleaned from over 5,000 stories which are stored at the State Historical Society of North Dakota, The Sod-busters, Book One in a series of memories of the frontier experience, collects seventeen of the personal histories of those who came to that endless sea of grass that challenged their strength and spirit as they broke the sod and farmed the land. Each book is illustrated with photographs from North Dakota collections. Book jacket.

Russia In The Early Modern World written by Donald Ostrowski and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-25 with History categories.

A fundamental problem in studying early modern Russian history is determining Russia’s historical development in relationship to the rest of the world. The focus throughout this book is on the continuity of Russian policies during the early modern period (1450–1800) and that those policies coincided with those of other successful contemporary Eurasian polities. The continuities occurred in the midst of constant change, but neither one nor the other, continuities or changes alone, can account for Russia’s success. Instead, Russian rulers from Ivan III to Catherine II with their hub advisors managed to sustain a balance between the two. During the early modern period, these Russian rulers invited into the country foreign experts to facilitate the transfer of technology and know-how, mostly from Europe but also from Asia. In this respect, they were willing to look abroad for solutions to domestic problems. Russia looked westward for military weaponry and techniques at the same time it was expanding eastward into the Eurasian heartland. The ruling elite and by extension the entire ruling class worked in cooperation with the ruler to implement policies. The Church played an active role in supporting the government and in seeking to eliminate opposition to the government.

This story took place in Billings, Montana, seventy years ago, in 1948. It is about the life and adventures of Tom Blake, an investigative reporter for the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Chronicle. For twenty years, since age seven, Tom had a fascination with going West to discover and investigate what was left of the Wild Western frontier. The seed was planted by his father, who often talked about what it might be like out West. Tom’s dream was to become a cowboy. When he left his job at the Chronicle, little did he suspect that a freak auto accident outside Billings would result in a romance with the beautiful, vivacious, and provocative Cody Carson. Their adventures are fascinating and thrilling, particularly the capture of a cattle-rustling gang, a murder mystery, the investigation, and the trial. Their story also helped to fulfill my dream of researching and writing about the people of the West—wild or not.

So has run the winding path of Cuming County's continual transformation into a patchwork quilt of farm fields, cattle yards, homes, and businesses, stitched together with the firm threads that make a county strong.

"The first adequate history of the High Country Empire I have ever found. . . . This is vivid, vigorous history, rich with incident, solid with research, firm with informed opinion. . . . On total score this is an outstanding book."--Hal Borland, Saturday Review. "It will make excellent supplementary reading for students of the American West, complementing the work of Bernard De Voto and Carl F. Kraenzel."--Walter Prescott Webb, New York Times Book Review. "Mr. Athearn is not only a good historian, he is an exceptionally able writer. His sparkling narrative--filled with quotable anecdotes and general perceptive insights--is a delight to read."--Gene M. Gressley, Library Journal. "This is a complex, many-sided story, and the author . . . somehow manages to hold it down to reasonable length and at the same time retain much of the variety and color inherent in his theme."--Oscar Lewis, New York Herald Tribune Book Review. "A very great mass of scholarly knowledge expands, illuminates, and makes all alive within the major framework, and Dr. Athearn writes with power and charm and is never pedestrian or pedantic."--San Francisco Chronicle. "Professor Athearn's depth of historical knowledge and perspective ties the story of this high country empire together so that it is socially and economically meaningful and at the same time entertaining."--Harlan Trott, Christian Science Monitor.
