Tuomas Tepora riisuu talvisodan hengen yltä myyttisen kaavun ja tarkastelee sitä laajasti ja eri puolilta, pääosin kotirintaman näkökulmasta mutta rintamamiehiäkään unohtamatta. Miten talvisodan henki syntyi ja miten sitä tietoisesti rakennettiin? Miten huhut elivät ja vaikuttivat? Hengessä esiintyi myös pohjavirtauksia: pelkoa, itsekkyyttä, epävarmuutta. Sodan lopulla henki alkoi rakoilla, ja sitä alettiin purkaa. Esiin nousivat viha ja epäluulo, salaliittoteoriat ja syntipukkien etsiminen. Kunniakas taistelu tuntui päättyneen häpeälliseen rauhaan. Filosofian tohtori Tuomas Tepora (s. 1978) on sujuvakynäinen uudemman sukupolven historiantutkija Helsingin yliopistossa. Hän on tutkinut mm. sodan ja tunteiden kulttuurihistoriaa, nationalismia ja ryhmäsymboleja. Teporan teos Sinun puolestas elää ja kuolla palkittiin vuoden 2011 tiedekirjana.

This book analyzes the multi-faceted phenomenon of Finnish military effectiveness in the Winter War (1939–40). Drawing on a wide array of primary and secondary sources, Pasi Tuunainen shows how by focusing on their own strengths and pitting these against the weaknesses of their adversary, the Finns were able to inflict heavy casualties on the Red Army whilst minimizing their own losses. The Finns were able to use their resources for effective operational purposes, and perform almost to their full potential. The Finnish small-unit tactics utilized the terrain and Arctic conditions for which they had prepared themselves, as well as forming cohesive units of well-motivated and qualitatively better professional leaders and citizen soldiers who could innovate and adapt. The Finnish Army had highly effective logistics, support and supply systems that kept the troops fighting.

Professori Laura Kolbe tarkastelee vuoden 1939 Helsinkiä hallinnon ja kunnallispolitiikan näkökulmasta. Dosentti Samu Nyström kirjoittaa kaupunkielämän arjesta ja juhlasta seuraten, miten sota lopulta vyöryi vastustamattomasti helsinkiläisten elämään. Filosofian tohtori Henrik Tala käy läpi kansainvälisen poliittisen murroksen vaiheita päähenkilönään pääministeri A. K. The Virgin is seated on a she-ass of the breed now known as the Mecca race, and the foal follows its mother, as is seen to this day in the East. Signal fires—still lit in Syria in time of trouble—are burning on the slope looking down from the tableland. St. Joseph is watching these fires intent on discovering any signs that may present themselves of a movement of soldiery upon the road. Of the trees that enrich the landscape, the nearest ones shelter a water-wheel used for the irrigation of the land. The more remote group clusters round a village, with its few huts visible by the lights that burn within. Having left the colder climate of the high country, then thickly populated and well cultivated, the fugitives have descended into the rich and more balmy atmosphere of the plain. As they advance nearer and nearer to a place of safety they feel the blessed relief of a sense of peace after disturbance and terror.
