This book summarizes the effective reinforcement of scaffolds by means of different kinds of fibers and tubes to meet different needs in the context of tissue repair. It covers the fabrication of the reinforced scaffolds, the factors influencing their properties, and their applications for hard and soft tissue repair. Further, it presents a range of concrete examples, case studies and research frontiers, providing readers a better understanding of how the respective fibers or tubes influence the mechanical properties, biodegradability, biocompatibility and bioactivity of scaffolds, and how they fulfill specific medical requirements. As such, the book provides a valuable and informative resource for researchers, technicians and students in the fields of biomaterials, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

The primary goal of the proposed work is to identify genes which play an anabolic role in bone and soft tissue function and to clarify the function of these genes. Three hypotheses have been proposed: I) The high bone density gene in chromosome I in our CAST/B6 congenic mice can be cloned; 2) Genes that regulate soft- and hard-tissue regeneration can be identified by using appropriate mouse strains that exhibit differences in regeneration; and 3) ENU mutagenesis, applied to our mouse model, will lead to the identity of genes that regulate soft and hard tissue function. During the last funding period, we have proposed several specific objectives for each of the above-mentioned hypotheses. As disclosed in the progress report, we have successfully accomplished all of the specific objectives. Our work during the first year of the funding period has resulted in two manuscripts in press, two published manuscripts, and three abstracts. We believe that the successful accomplishment of the proposed studies will provide a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in hard- and soft-tissue regeneration and will provide a framework for future development of therapies for hard and soft tissue injuries.

This is a follow up of the authors’ previous book entitled “Bioactive materials for bone regeneration . Generally speaking, human tissue can be classified as hard tissue such as bone and soft tissue such as skin, mussel, tendon, blood vessel, nerve etc. and including important organs such as heart, liver, lung. Regenerative medicine is dealing with both hard tissue and soft tissue regeneration and is one of the most important part of the modern medicine with significant clinical needs including general surgery, plastic surgery, burn and wound healing, cardiovascular disease treatments. Based on the authors’ previous research and review of the international advances in hard tissue regeneration, this book focuses on the hard tissue regeneration using bioactive materials. It covers biomaterials for entire human tissue regeneration, which is key important for research and development in the field of biomedical engineering and the medical device industry. This book will give readers a comprehensive review of principal and the most updated advances of the research in bioactive materials for soft tissue repair and regeneration, and perspectives for the future directions of the research and development in this field. Covers recent development of bioactive materials for soft tissue regeneration Provides basic principles for design of bioactive materials for tissue regeneration Includes future perspectives surrounding the development of bioactive materials that will be valuable to the readers

Oral tissue engineering involves the study of current approaches for in vitro regeneration of soft and hard tissues located into the oral cavity. In this context, recent approaches involves the use of innovative biomaterials to replace the lost or damaged human oral tissues. Recent discoveries in materials science and nanotechnology are drastically changing the traditional approach to dentistry by the design of innovative devices able more efficiently supporting the natural regeneration process. The objective of this book is to highlight current progress in tissue engineering for various dental hard/soft tissues including enamel, dentin, pulp, alveolar bone, periodontium, gum and oral mucosa, by emphasizing the role of materials and their specific applications.
