The Promessa, a 1970s cocktail bar, is to be reopened in Tehran. Not as the glamorous location it once was, but as a slick showroom for art, fashion, and corporate receptions-a heady mix of profit, culture, and metropolitan swagger. By and by a hidden agenda emerges, involving an international network with gruesome intentions. Join the narrator, a young man with artistic ambitions who has no wish to disappoint his cosmopolitan backers, as he frantically struggles to open the Promessa on time. Shamelessly opportunistic, he turns local painters into stage props, militia members into video artists, and a spate in prison into a career opportunity. A frenetic, compelling look at modern Tehran, conspiracy theories, political fashions and the omnivorous international art world. The most suprising novel I've read in years.' Andrei Kurkov Funny, cynical and sharp' Tom McCarthy 'A sharp and well-timed novel' 3:AM Magazine 'Under the guise of a thriller Softcore serves as a smart- if schizophrenic- commentary on Iran at the intersection of competing cultural and political forces, where art and politi, meaning and form are interwoven, confused and exploited.' Daily Star 'A rare and fascinating glimpse of an Iran that both Ahmadinejad and the Western media would rather we didn't see.' New Internationalist 'A surprising and...enjoyable read' Complete Review

Soft in the Middle positions the contemporary softcore feature as a middlebrow form of pornography. In meticulous detail, Soft in the Middle demonstrates that softcore's under-the-radar success and pervasive cultural devaluation may be understood in terms of the "postfeminist" strategies employed by successive generations of producers and distributors, each intent on overcoming obstacles to the mainstream distribution of pornographic material. Softcore and its American precursors became more "feminized" and "female friendly" as their distribution widened, a process hastened in the 1980s by the industry's transition to private, non-theatrical modes of distribution and exhibition (e.g., home-video outlets and premium-cable networks). One of the byproducts of this development is that contemporary softcore has frequently resorted to what are arguably anti-male or "misandristic" attitudes and depictions. Clearly, the genre challenges traditional assumptions about pornography, including those held by feminists on both sides of "the porn debates." Drawing on original industrial research, extensive sampling, and wide-ranging scholarship, Soft in the Middle offers a nuanced look at a discreetly indecent genre whose central commodity has always been female nudity. Amber is the collective name for a suite of programs that allow users to carry out molecular dynamics simulations, particularly on biomolecules. None of the individual programs carries this name, but the various parts work reasonably well together, and provide a powerful framework for many common calculations.[1, 2] The term Amber is also used to refer to the empirical force fields that are implemented here.[3, 4] It should be recognized, however, that the code and force field are separate: several other computer packages have implemented the Amber force fields, and other force fields can be implemented with the Amber programs. Further, the force fields are in the public domain, whereas the codes are distributed under a license agreement. The Amber software suite is divided into two parts: AmberTools23, a collection of freely available programs mostly under the GPL license, and Amber22, which is centered around the pmemd simulation program, and which continues to be licensed as before, under a more restrictive license. Amber22 represents a significant change from the most recent previous version, Amber20. (We have moved to numbering Amber releases by the last two digits of the calendar year, so there are no odd-numbered versions.) Please see https://ambermd.org for an overview of the most important changes. AmberTools is a set of programs for biomolecular simulation and analysis. They are designed to work well with each other, and with the “regular” Amber suite of programs. You can perform many simulation tasks with AmberTools, and you can do more extensive simulations with the combination of AmberTools and Amber itself. Most components of AmberTools are released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). A few components are in the public domain or have other open-source licenses. As the first survey of its kind, Soft in the Middle positions the contemporary softcore feature as a middlebrow form of pornography. This genre of film and video has been produced by a complex and often elusive industry situated in the ambiguous "middle" regions between hardcore and Hollywood. Softcore and its American precursors became more "feminized" and "female friendly" as their distribution widened, a process hastened in the 1980s by the industry's transition to private, non-theatrical modes of distribution and exhibition (e.g., home-video outlets and premium-cable networks like Cinemax). The book examines the genre's history, describes its deflationary trajectory, and differentiates the reading patterns of its disparate audiences, including "cult" critics and feminist critics. Naturally, the book also considers the genre's formal and ideological conventions, surveying its most exemplary subgenres, styles, and motifs--and lavishing particular attention on its most influential studios, directors, and texts.

Begging Questions written by Dean, Hartley and has been published by Policy Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-09-16 with Political Science categories.

Begging is widely condemned, but little understood. It is increasingly visible, yet politically controversial. Recent changes in British social security, housing and mental health provision can be seen to have exacerbated the extent of begging in the UK, and its persistence is an indictment of the failures of social policy throughout the Western world. Though begging is intimately linked to issues of street homelessness, mental health, substance abuse and social exclusion, this book specifically focuses on begging as a distinctive form of marginalised economic activity. It looks at: the significance of face-to-face contact between beggars and passers-by; the preoccupation with the classification of beggars; the stigma associated with begging and judgements required by the passer-by; the place of begging in the spectrum of informal economic activity. The book provides a comprehensive overview and will stimulate theoretical, policy and methodological debates, driving forward the research agenda. It is important reading for researchers, academics and students in social policy, social work, sociology, politics and socio-legal studies, and also for social work practitioners and, particularly, policy makers.

This book, gathering the Proceedings of the 2018 Computing Conference, offers a remarkable collection of chapters covering a wide range of topics in intelligent systems, computing and their real-world applications. The Conference attracted a total of 568 submissions from pioneering researchers, scientists, industrial engineers, and students from all around the world. These submissions underwent a double-blind peer review process. Of those 568 submissions, 192 submissions (including 14 poster papers) were selected for inclusion in these proceedings. Despite computer science’s comparatively brief history as a formal academic discipline, it has made a number of fundamental contributions to science and society—in fact, along with electronics, it is a founding science of the current epoch of human history (‘the Information Age’) and a main driver of the Information Revolution. The goal of this conference is to provide a platform for researchers to present fundamental contributions, and to be a premier venue for academic and industry practitioners to share new ideas and development experiences. This book collects state of the art chapters on all aspects of Computer Science, from classical to intelligent. It covers both the theory and applications of the latest computer technologies and methodologies. Providing the state of the art in intelligent methods and techniques for solving real-world problems, along with a vision of future research, the book will be interesting and valuable for a broad readership.

Hardcore pornographic films combine fantasy and real sex to create a unique genre of entertainment. Pornographic films are also historical documents that give us access to the sexual behavior and eroticism of different historical periods. This book shows how the making of pornographic films is a social process that draws on the fantasies, sexual scripts, and sexual identities of performers, writers, directors, and editors to produce sexually exciting videos and movies. Yet hardcore pornographic films have also created a body of knowledge that constitutes, in this digital age, an enormous archive of sexual fantasies that serve as both a form of sex education and self-help guides. Sex, Society, and the Making of Pornography focuses on sex and what can be learned about it from pornographic representations.
