An in-depth review of key techniques in software error detection Software error detection is one of the most challenging problems in software engineering. Now, you can learn how to make the most of software testing by selecting test cases to maximize the probability of revealing latent errors. Software Error Detection through Testing and Analysis begins with a thorough discussion of test-case selection and a review of the concepts, notations, and principles used in the book. Next, it covers: Code-based test-case selection methods Specification-based test-case selection methods Additional advanced topics in testing Analysis of symbolic trace Static analysis Program instrumentation Each chapter begins with a clear introduction and ends with exercises for readers to test their understanding of the material. Plus, appendices provide a logico-mathematical background, glossary, and questions for self-assessment. Assuming a basic background in software quality assurance and an ability to write nontrivial programs, the book is free of programming languages and paradigms used to construct the program under test. Software Error Detection through Testing and Analysis is suitable as a professional reference for software testing specialists, software engineers, software developers, and software programmers. It is also appropriate as a textbook for software engineering, software testing, and software quality assurance courses at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels.

“The situation is good, but not hopeless” (Polish folk wisdom) The text is devoted to the Software Analysis and Testing (SAT) methods and s- porting tools for assessing and, if possible, improving software quality, specifically its correctness. The term quality assurance is avoided for it is this author’s firm belief that in the current state of the art that goal is unattainable, a plethora of “gu- anteed” solutions to the problem notwithstanding. Therefore, the rather awkward phrase “improving correctness” is to be understood as an effort to minimize the number of residual programming faults (“bugs”) and their impact on the software’s behavior, that is, to make the faults tolerable. It is clear that such a minimalist approach is a result of frustration. Indeed, having spent years developing software and teaching (preaching?) “How to do it right,” I still do not know how to go about it with any degree of certainty! It appears then I probably should stop right now, for who with a modicum of common sense would reach for a text that does not offer salvation but (as will be seen) hard work and misery? If I intend to continue, it is only that I suspect there are many professionals out there who have similar doubts. And they are the intended audience of this project. The philosophical underpinning of the text is the importance of sound engine- ing practices in software development.

Software Reliability written by Thomas A. Thayer and has been published by North-Holland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1978 with Computers categories.

The objectives of this work are: determine what software structural and development characteristics are available for analysis and which of these characteristics are relevant to the description (or prediction) of software reliability; define improved methods for collecting reliability data; based on error histories seen in the data, define sets of error categories, both causative and symptomatic, to be applied in the analysis of software problem reports and their closures; recommended changes in 1) development techniques to enhance the error-freeness (reliability) of the coded product and 2) test techniques to make it possible to find more errors earlier; perform a survey of existing software reliability models; extend Nelson's Mathematical Theory of Software Reliability (MTSR) and apply it to data collected on an ongoing software development project.

Software Failure Investigation written by Jan Eloff and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-07 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book reviews existing operational software failure analysis techniques and proposes near-miss analysis as a novel, and new technique for investigating and preventing software failures. The authors provide details on how near-miss analysis techniques focus on the time-window before the software failure actually unfolds, so as to detect the high-risk conditions that can lead to a major failure. They detail how by alerting system users of an upcoming software failure, the detection of near misses provides an opportunity to collect at runtime failure-related data that is complete and relevant. They present a near-miss management systems (NMS) for detecting upcoming software failures, which can contribute significantly to the improvement of the accuracy of the software failure analysis. A prototype of the NMS is implemented and is discussed in the book. The authors give a practical hands-on approach towards doing software failure investigations by means of near-miss analysis that is of use to industry and academia

Software Reliability written by Hermann Kopetz and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1979 with Computers categories.

This book is intended for the student of computing and the practising computer professional who is concerned about the unreliability of computer systems. It is the author's aim to bring an understanding of the concept of software reliability and to impart some ideas, which should lead to the development of more reliable soft ware systems. The book tries to bridge the gap between theory and practice and will thus be valuable supplemental reading for a course on software engineering. During my work on real-time systems in industry I have seen many occasions where the subjects of testing, error detection and error handling have been tackled in an unsystematic, ad hoc fashion which leads to subsequent problems in the integration phase. The chapters on these subjects formed the starting point of this book and other chapters were developed in order to produce a clear and concise text covering the whole subject of software reliability, while always keeping the practical aspect in mind. This English edition is a revised version of the original German edition. The author would like to thank all his friends and colleagues for their help, suggestions and remarks on the German text. Many of the comments which have been raised have been considered in this revised English version.
