In questo primo volume dell’Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Cesare Zavattini presentiamo un’ampia selezione di soggetti cinematografici mai divenuti film, tutti corredati da note storico-critiche e note filologico genetiche, e confrontabili con alcune varianti raccolte online nel portale dell’Edizione Nazionale. Presso l’Archivio Cesare Zavattini conservato alla Biblioteca Panizzi di Reggio Emilia si trovano documenti relativi a circa duecentotrenta film scritti e firmati da Zavattini (anche come co-autore), tra i quali sono circa centosessanta i soggetti cinematografici mai realizzati, molti dei quali ancora inediti. Del lavoro incessante di Cesare Zavattini di stesura di soggetti e sceneggiature per il cinema (e a volte per la televisione) ci interessa mostrare l’officina delle scritture, anche nel loro divenire. Di fondo c’è una scommessa teorica: entrare nell’ecosistema Zavattini non dai testi più autorevoli, come le opere letterarie e poetiche, ma attraverso quelli più dimenticati e misteriosi, come i soggetti e i progetti per film non realizzati. Questo permette anche una rilettura della storia del cinema e della cultura attraverso i materiali d’archivio.

Cesare Zavattini iniziò a tenere regolarmente un diario il 14 gennaio del 1941 e continuò a “resocontare” le sue giornate sino al 1987. I quaderni zavattiniani sono da subito “un tritume di nomi di fatti di pensieri”, un coacervo di temi, personaggi, azioni, progetti, ricordi: cronaca personale e storia italiana formano un amalgama denso e di estremo interesse per il lettore che ha modo di entrare nella mente di un uomo che è stato uno degli artisti più originali e complessi del Novecento. Zavattini racconta e confessa con un desiderio di sincerità, di conoscenza, di verità disarmanti, nella forma che più gli era congeniale: la scrittura in prima persona, autobiografica, nutrita di immagini e di pensiero, riuscendo a offrire un quadro esatto e insieme appassionato di protagonisti e fatti cruciali del suo tempo. La parte più significativa è rappresentata dalle anteprime inedite di soggetti cinematografici e dei progetti letterari e poetici in nuce, un corpus di poetica di valore inestimabile. Non mancano momenti lirici, nelle frequenti descrizioni di passeggiate, di luoghi dell’anima (Luzzara, il suo paese, il Po, Roma); nella cura commovente di una famiglia numerosa, nell’amore per il padre, figura onnipresente, invocata e mai dimenticata. Za è un uomo, con le sue debolezze, ma anche e soprattutto un intellettuale raffinatissimo e colto, curioso, vorace, consapevole di sé eppure mai autocelebrativo, che si interroga sul proprio lavoro, sulla vita, i sentimenti, su grandi temi come la pace, l’esistenza di Dio, e delinea con arguzia critica un ritratto originale di tutti coloro che percorsero un tratto di strada accanto a lui lasciando un segno indelebile nel mondo. In questo terzo volume sono raccolti, a cura di Valentina Fortichiari, i diari degli anni ottanta, fino all’ultima annotazione, quella del 25 ottobre 1987, prima che le sue condizioni di salute non gli permettessero di continuare.

Unfinished work or interrupted work... It is difficult to find a definition, to identify the theme, to distinguish chance from intentionality. Few 'genres' and / or variations express as the 'unfinished' the same need for what is external to the work and which somehow completes it, bringing the work in a privileged position to create a harmony with our restless modernity. No wonder that in literature, in addition to what has been brutally interrupted, the letters, the diaries, the chronicles of disease and suffering are naturally suspended works. No wonder either that incompleteness accompanies the writings referring to unsolved issues, hidden traumas, silent melancholy. Dictated by choice or by distinct degrees of incapacity, the temptation of the unfinished pursues, urges, deludes its author... The private writings, the sketches, the projects, the papers testify the path necessary for the work to develop and conquer its shape. This book is rich and suggestive and has been conceived and edited by Anna Dolfi. Like its very object, the work is drafted in the perspective of the unfinished and questions some of the many possible examples, along a diachronic arc that goes to literature at figurative arts, theatre, cinema: from Leonardo to Blake, from Ariosto to Stendhal, from Dossi to Gadda, from Kafka to Borges, from Sarraute to Morante, from unknown writers affected by 'cancroregina' to the last Pirandello staged by Tiezzi, up to Fellini of the impossible Mastorna ... At the centre of the volume the readers will find a section with the typescript pages and the unpublished notebooks of / for the work La scelta by Giuseppe Dessí. They lead to the limits of white space, where the chambre claire fixes what is hidden beyond the writing with few, rarefied signs.

Il volume raccoglie gli atti del convegno internazionale La storia del cattolicesimo contemporaneo e le memorie del cinema e dell’audiovisivo organizzato dal Centro di ricerca Catholicism and Audiovisual Studies (CAST) dell’Università Telematica Internazionale UniNettuno. I diversi contributi mirano a realizzare un primo stato dell’arte sulle fonti audiovisive e le pratiche di ricerca per lo studio della storia del cattolicesimo contemporaneo: da un lato emergono le riflessioni delle istituzioni che conservano materiale audiovisivo afferente a realtà cattoliche e di enti ecclesiastici che consentono di mappare l’esistente e procedere a un raffronto teorico e tecnico sulle pratiche d’archivio e sulle frontiere aperte dalla svolta digitale; dall’altro viene sollecitato un dibattito ampio e interdisciplinare attorno alla funzione storiografica delle immagini in movimento e dell’audiovisivo per lo studio del cattolicesimo. Il quadro che scaturisce da queste ricostruzioni indica i confini di una sfida culturale globale che coinvolge diversi attori, ma dalla quale dipende la salvaguardia di un patrimonio fondamentale per la memoria del nostro passato.
