Foundations On Rock written by Duncan C. Wyllie and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-09-02 with Architecture categories.

This second edition of the successful Foundations on Rock presents an up-to-date practical reference book describing current engineering practice in the investigation, design and construction of foundations on rock. An extra chapter on Tension Foundations has been included. The methods set out are readily applicable to high rise buildings, bridges, dams and structures subject to uplift and turning loads. Foundations on Rock differs from the many texts and handbooks on soil foundations in that it focuses on the effect of geology on the stability and settlement of rock foundations. While the intact rock may be strong, defects in the rock such as faults, joints and cavities, and the deterioration of the rock with time, will have a significant effect on foundation performance. Methods of detecting such defects are described, and their implications for foundation design and treatment are elaborated.

More detailed guidance is given for several procedures including identification of minerals in the process of naming rocks, comparisons of terminology between engineering geology and the other geosciences and alignment of the classification approach to that proposed for earthworks in line with EN 16907.The book continues to provide invaluable practical guidance in carrying out engineering geological logging of soil and rock samples and exposures in the field. The systematic and codified approach are laid out in detail to ensure the defined descriptors are used in a consistent format, rendering mistakes less likely and the necessary communication from field to design more successful. The procedures, techniques and tips within this book continue to serve and guide young practitioners learning their craft, but also their seniors and mentors, including responsible experts who sign off the logs and report on behalf of their company. More than ever the need to be aware of current practices in order to avoid costly mistakes is paramount.

This book constitutes the definitive handbook to soil mechanics, covering in great detail such topics as: Properties of Soils, Hydraulic and Mechanical Properties of Soils, Drainage of Soils, Plastic Equilibrium in Soils, Earth Stability and Pressure of Slopes, Foundations, etc. A valuable compendium for those interested in soil mechanics, this antiquarian text contains a wealth of information still very much valuable to engineers today. Karl von Terzaghi (1883 1963) was a Czech geologist and Civil engineer, hailed as the "father of soil mechanics." This book has been elected for republication due to its educational value and is proudly republished here with an introductory biography of the author."

Rock And Soil Mechanics written by W. Derski and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-02 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Although theoretical in character, this book provides a useful source of information for those dealing with practical problems relating to rock and soil mechanics - a discipline which, in the view of the authors, attempts to apply the theory of continuum to the mechanical investigation of rock and soil media. The book is in two separate parts. The first part, embodying the first three chapters, is devoted to a description of the media of interest. Chapter 1 introduces the main argument and discusses the essence of the discipline and its links with other branches of science which are concerned, on the one hand, with technical mechanics and, on the other, with the properties, origins, and formation of rock and soil strata under natural field conditions. Chapter 2 describes mechanical models of bodies useful for the purpose of the discourse and defines the concept of the limit shear resistance of soils and rocks. Chapter 3 gives the actual properties of soils and rocks determined from experiments in laboratories and in situ. Several tests used in geotechnical engineering are described and interconnections between the physical state of rocks and soils and their rheological parameters are considered. The second part of the book considers the applications of various theories which were either first developed for descriptive purposes in continuum mechanics and then adopted in soil and rock mechanics, or were specially developed for the latter discipline. Chapter 4 discusses the application of the theory of linear viscoelasticity in solving problems of stable behaviour of rocks and soils. Chapter 5 covers the use of the groundwater flow theory as applied to several problems connected with water movement in an undeformable soil or rock skeleton. Chapter 6 is a natural expansion of the arguments put forward in the previous chapter. Here the movement of water is regarded as the cause of deformation of the rock or soil skeleton and the consolidation theory developed on this basis is presented in a novel formulation. Some new engineering solutions are also reported. The seventh chapter is devoted to the limit state theory as applied to the study of the mechanical behaviour of soils and rocks. It presents some new solutions and methods which include both static and kinematic aspects of the problem, and some original effective methods for investigating media of limited cohesion. The final chapter gives a systematic account of the mechanics of highly dispersed soils, commonly called clays.

More often than not, it is difficult or even impossible to obtain directly the specific rock parameters of interest using in situ methods. The procedures for measuring most rock properties are also time consuming and expensive. Engineering Properties of Rocks, Second Edition, explores the use of typical values and/or empirical correlations of similar rocks to determine the specific parameters needed. The book is based on the author's extensive experience and offers a single source of information for the evaluation of rock properties. It systematically describes the classification and characterization of intact rock, rock discontinuities, and rock masses, and presents the various indirect methods for estimating the deformability, strength, and permeability of these components as well as the in situ rock stresses. - Presents a single source for the correlations on rock properties - Saves time and resources invested on in situ testing procedures - Fully updated with current literature - Expanded coverage of rock types and geographical locations

Reflections On Slope Stability Engineering written by Edward N. Bromhead and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-09-19 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Slope stability engineering is both an art and a science practised by many civil and geotechnical engineers involved in work on landslides, earth dams, breakwaters, coastal defence, earthworks slopes for roads, canals, railways, pipelines, housing developments, and other related developments. This book contains the detailed reflections of its author, who has practised and researched in the field for over a half-century. It is written in an informal style that makes it an interesting and thought-provoking practitioner guide to landslides and slope problems and their investigation, analysis, and remediation, considering both natural and man-made slopes and earthworks, and without the need for the usual equations and illustrations. Reflections on Slope Stability Engineering is targeted primarily at practitioners working in the investigations of slope instability and the design and construction of treatments of the problem, especially those early in their careers, but the accessible style also suits students who are developing an interest in the subject and even those engineers with only a casual interest in this branch of geotechnics.
