Excerpt from Soil Physics and Management This book is written for three purposes: first, as a text-book for agricultural students; second, as a reference book for the practical farmer; and, third, as an aid to the land owner who desires information in the personal management of his land. Soil physics is the application of physics to soils. It is so closely related to other sciences that it becomes necessary to trespass upon the ground of some of them, notably botany, geology, chemistry, and zoology, to present certain subjects clearly and completely. Soil physics dovetails in with the closely-related phases of agronomy, as soil biology, soil fertility, crop production, and agricultural engineering, to such an extent that it is necessary to give material very closely related to all of these. An attempt has been made to emphasize the principles of soil physics, omitting the details of practice except where necessary for purposes of illustration. Although the book is written in the Middle West, yet the principles given apply anywhere. The arrangement of the matter presented has been carefully planned from the teaching standpoint, and has been tested in the classroom for several years. Various sources of information have been used by the authors and acknowledgment made accordingly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Principles of Soil Management In 1895 the preface was written for the Rural Science Series. It set forth the purpose of the Series to be the desire to place in readable form the best results of scientific thought and discovery relating to agriculture and country life, in order that the general public might be made aware of the progress, and that farmers might be led more effectively to apply the information in their daily work. It was the hope that the Series, under the present writer's direction or another's, might gradually extend itself to the whole range of agricultural scientific literature. The books now included in The Rural Science Series are about two dozen, making nearly two volumes, on the average, for each year. The number of writers on agricultural topics is increasing, the knowledge on all subjects is rapidly accumulating, and the reading-public is gradually enlarging; there is every reason to expect, therefore, that the Series will extend itself still more rapidly in the years to come. It was considered to be an auspicious circumstance that the Rural Science Series began with a book on the soil, for this grounded the enterprise. This textbook on the applied aspects of soil physics covers introduction to soil physical properties and processes, and their evaluation and management in relation to plant growth. It distinguishes physical properties that directly influence plant growth from those that indirectly affect agricultural productivity. Chapters are also devoted to the concept of soil health and the role of soil physics on preservation of soil health and environmental quality. As such, this book fills a unique knowledge gap for agriculture and agronomy students, course directors as well as field professionals.

This second edition was undertaken to update information which has become available since the first edition and to convert completely to the SI system. The main objective of this book is to stress application of soil physics principles to real problems. The problems are heavily oriented toward the soil water-plant-atmosphere continuum. This book grew out of a course taught to upper level undergraduate and graduate students from many different disciplines and backgrounds. I have found that problems are a very good teaching tool because students need to solve them on their own and adapt them to their own understanding. I have found this problem-solving experience to be greatly enhanced if examples are available. Thus, this book is heavily laden with examples. This edition includes reference to many models, involving basic concepts discussed herein, by which it is possible to solve many more realistic--and more complex--problems such as drainage below the root zone (and associated pollution), plant growth as related to climate, soil properties, management, etc. The intent is to encourage students to advance to the next level. The book is not intended to be a complete introduction to applied soil physics, but rather to emphasize problem-solving and the important aspects of soil water and temperature.
