Paradoxaal genoeg kampen universiteiten toch met ?onrendabele?, te weinig studenten trekkende studies zoals de zogeheten kleine talen, waarover al tientallen jaren wordt gediscussieerd. In deze bundel worden verschillende aspecten van samenwerking, concurrentie en taakverdeling behandeld. Daaruit blijkt dat de universiteiten telkens opnieuw op zoek gingen naar een eigen profiel".

Om aan al deze wensen tegemoet te komen, wringen zij zich in de ene reorganisatie na de andere, volgens telkens nieuwe managementmodellen. Het aantal ambtenaren en managers dat de rendementsverbetering in het onderwijs, de ondersteuning van het onderzoek, het bewaken van de efficiency en wat niet al in goede banen moet leiden, is hierdoor explosief toegenomen. Alom wordt nu de klacht aangeheven, dat de universiteit is overgenomen door managers.
