This report is an introduction to solar-terrestrial phenomena for those with no special background in astrophysics or solar astronomy. Discussions of physics have been kept to a minimum, with emphasis on phenomonology instead. An individual completely unfamiliar with solar events should, after reading this volume, be able to read and understand the SESC Report and Forecast of Solar Geophysical Activity and be able to apply its contents to his particular area of concern. This volume is also intended as a quick reference work for Skylab ATM Principal Investigator Teams to assist them in using the ATM data book. For that reason, a list of abbreviations used in forecasts and observatory reports is included. Subjects discussed are solar structure and processes, solar activity, and solar-terrestrial relations. At the XV. General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union in Sydney 1973, Commission 10 for Solar Activity requested the incoming Organising Committee to establish a small group to recommend a standard nomenclature for solar features and to prepare an illustrated text which would clear the jungle of terms for the benefit of solar physicists as well as of theoreticians and research workers in related fields. The challenge was taken up by the president of Commission 10, Prof. K. O. Kiepenheuer, and his persuasive advocacy has led eventually to the present book. In the course of the work, the declared aim but not the basic purpose was revised. Rather than prepare a list of standard terms, we have preferred to collect together all the terms that appear in current English-language literature. Synonyms and partially overlapping terms are all recorded for the most part without prejudice. Each has been defined as exactly as possible with the hope that in the future they may be used and understood without ambiguity. It would be a step on the road to standardisation if these terms were not re-used for new phenomena. New observations and new theories will lead to reappraisals and redefinitions so the Glossary is intended more as a guide to the present situation than as a rule-book.

This Directory of Monitoring Sun-Earth Environment (MONSEE) Stations contains detailed information about a number of worldwide continuously monitoring stations in the network of solar-terrestrial physics disciplines. Most of the information comes from the 'Questionnaries for MONSEE Station Directory' which were returned to the International Council of Scientific Unions' (ICSU) Special Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics Secretary. This directory is intended to bridge the gap between the availability of continuously monitored solar-terrestrial data and the awareness of possible users of these data. The structured format of each station entry provides some degree of homogeneity, and when familiar with this format, certain information can be located at a glance. Some station entries are more detailed than others, but all identify an additional source for more information about the station and the data. A total of 1032 individual entries are included in this directory covering the following disciplines of solar-terrestrial physics monitoring: solar and interplanetary phenomena, ionospheric phenomena, flare-associated events, geomagnetic variations, aurora, cosmic rays, and airglow.
