This volume examines the changing role of Marian devotion in politics, public life, and popular culture in Western Europe and America during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This transnational approach illuminates the deep transformations of devotional cultures across the world. Demystifying the Sacred: Blasphemy and Violence from the French Revolution to Today offers a much-needed analysis of a subject that historians have largely ignored, yet that has considerable relevance for today’s world: the powerful connection that exists between offences against the sacred and different forms of violence. Drawing on cases from revolutionary France to the Russia of Vladimir Putin, the international authors probe the nature and agency of local blasphemy accusations, the historical and legal framework in which they were expressed and the violence, both physical and symbolic, accompanying them. In doing so, the volume reveals how cultures of blasphemy, and related acts of heresy, apostasy and sacrilege, were a companion to or acted as a trigger for physical action but also a form of how violence was experienced. Esta tesis es una propuesta metodológica de historia religiosa que se concreta en el estudio de la diócesis de Zamora durante la Restauración monárquica (1875-1914). Según el programa de la historia religiosa, cuyas intuiciones se desarrollan en el capítulo introductorio, a lo largo de estas páginas se da una gran amplitud al análisis de lo institucional, lo doctrinal y lo sociológico. Todas estas dimensiones se abordan atendiendo a la especificidad del hecho religioso en la historia contemporánea, lo que otorga a este estudio un carácter interdisciplinar que se construye además sobre una amplia explotación de los archivos locales. En la primera parte de la tesis se traza una radiografía de España, la Iglesia y la sociedad que saluda la llegada de la Restauración [capítulo I] y se hace una presentación de la diócesis de Zamora en el siglo XIX [capítulo II]. La segunda parte está dedicada a la jerarquía eclesiástica. En ella se exponen las biografías de los prelados que ocuparon la sede episcopal [capítulo III], el mensaje que pronunciaban como líderes de la comunidad católica [capítulo IV], el ejercicio de gobierno al frente de la diócesis [capítulo V] y las relaciones institucionales [capítulo VI]. En la tercera parte se hace una presentación de la vida del pueblo creyente en la variada actividad de sus agentes: clero secular y Seminario diocesano [capítulo VII], religiosos y religiosas [capítulo VIII], y laicos en sus múltiples asociaciones y diversos modos de presencia [capítulos IX y X]. Teoría(s) de la novela moderna en Españarevisa, a través de trece contribuciones de otros tantos autores, la forma de transmitir la teoría y la historia de la literatura y abre vías de reflexión para posibilitar una historia formal de la novela moderna(1868-1966). Cuestiona el enfoque lineal y la segmentación historicista y busca entender el enfrentamiento que a lo largo del siglo xx ha ido oponiendo a los defensores de un arte –predominantemente– realista o mimético a los partidarios de un arte –predominantemente– antimimético, es decir, un arte por el arte, un arte desrealizado, cuando no deshumanizado. Es lo que llamamos aquí «querella del realismo». En el conjunto de estos estudios nos detenemos en tres momentos de esta lucha: realismo y modernismo(s), literatura deshumanizada y de avanzada, nouveau romany realismo social. En España, la teoría de la novela de José Ortega y Gasset –y su polémica recepción en los años 1920, 1950 y 1970–, jugó un papel decisivo en la interpretación de estos enfrentamientos que se solapan con supuestas crisis de la novela y la construcción del canon. A partir de esta constatación, se levanta el velo sobre los motivos –ideológicos– que han llevado a la condena de los creadores más atentos a la dimensión poética del lenguaje y al rechazo de los supuestos desvíos de un género novel, tildados de antinovelescos, por antimiméticos.
