Afhandlingen Solidaritet, anerkendelse, retfærdighed og god dømmekraft udvikler og begrunder et normativt solidaritetsideal i lyset af idealet om at gennemføre en kritisk analyse af udviklingstendenser i samfundet. I afhandlingens første del redegøres for de videnskabsteoretiske præmisser. I anden del udvikles idealet, og solidaritet bestemmes som et overbegreb for anerkendelse, retfærdighed og god dømmekraft. En retfærdig anerkendelsesorden bliver i dette perspektiv forudsætningen for menneskelig selvrealisering og samfundsmæssig sammenhængskraft. I afhandlingens tredje del gennemføres en kritisk analyse af samfundsudviklingen på tre niveauer: først en analyse af udviklingen i den moderne kultur. Dernæst en analyse af velfærdsstatens og velfærdspolitikkens udvikling i Danmark med særligt fokus på social- og beskæftigelsesområdet, og endelig en analyse af velfærdspolitikkens omsætning over for borgerne i socialforvaltninger og jobcentre. Analyserne viser, at der er en afgrund mellem det udviklede solidaritetsideal og de sociale realiteter. På den baggrund peges på behovet for en omfattende samfundsmæssig, velfærdspolitisk og institutionel fornyelse. Det ses som forudsætningen for, at modernitetens destruktive muligheder kan holdes i ave, at velfærdsstatens store fortælling om gode leveforhold for alle kan realiseres, og at krænkelser i mødet mellem system og borger kan minimeres.

Tracing the origins, evolution, and goals of Polish and Estonian émigré politics in Cold War Sweden and its linkages with both the host and homeland societies, this book investigates the transnational dimension of resistance and opposition to the communist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe. The analysis of the constantly shifting, at times conspiratorial, and even subversive networks that transcended the Iron Curtain draws a line from World War II to the collapse of the Soviet Union, framing half a century of transnationally concerted political activism in a geographical context that has not received much scholarly attention. Challenging the image of the Baltic Sea Region as a periphery of the European Cold War theater, the topography of the multilayered and complex linkages between neutral Sweden and her opposite coasts suggests that the small inland sea was a particularly vibrant setting for processes that efficiently defied the rigid border regimes of the Cold War era. This book relates both to ongoing historiographical debates about the scope and extent of East-West contacts that developed underneath the radar of international diplomacy and to the question of the role, significance, and impact of émigré politics during the Cold War. Embedding the dynamics of transnationally framed opposition in the wider context of political, economic, and cultural relations at the northeastern peripheries of divided Europe, the study not only sheds new light on so far still unexplored facets of interaction and cooperation between societies in East and West, but also offers a first comprehensive synthesis of the Baltic Sea Region’s post-war history.

The Religious Origins of Democratic Pluralism focuses on explaining one of the riddles that fascinated historians and political scientists for much of the twentieth century, namely, the origin and development of Swedish social democracy. While othercountries in Europe experienced dramatic swings between radical and conservative political parties, which resulted in tragic experiments with totalitarian regimes, Sweden, by contrast, miraculously seemed to avoid these extremes, and instead maintained space for democratic discussion and even dissent. This peaceful transformation was facilitated by political actors who crafted the discourse of their debates in such a way that pluralism came to be valued as an ethical good and then vigorously defended. This study examines the decades leading up to the emergence of social democracy in Sweden, and in particular, the career of one prominent politician, Paul Peter Waldenstrom (1838-1917). Waldenstrom was a clergyman, revival preacher, educator,author, and newspaper editor, whose political career began in 1868 with his participation in the Church Assembly of the Church of Sweden. His role expanded during his years of service in the Swedish parliament, the Riksdag, from 1884-1905. This study places Waldenstrom in dialogue with his contemporaries and opponents as a means of identifying how the theological values and priorities of the religious awakening were articulated in the public sphere and contributed to the development of a new political order.
