The context of the work is the analysis of African values. The significance is the avoidance of generalizations. There are cultures in Africa and not just one culture and in each culture, there is a diversity of clans. The analysis of African values ought to have universal relevance, hence the use of phenomenological-hermeneutical method. This is the first analysis of such a value in the Igbo cultural group. It is at the same time a contribution to an important and often neglected aspect of development: human development. The personality of the individual is a fundamental principle. This dignity is enriched and thus matures through his openness to others and positive contribution to the development of their personality. In order to show that our principle is not a mere abstract idealization, the second part of the work is a hermeneutical analysis of solidarity as found among the Igbo of Nigeria. Sylvanus Ifeanyichukwu Nnoruka is a Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Onitsha (Nigeria). He has published Personal Identity: a Philosophical Survey as well as other books and articles.

The term solidarity has acquired a commendable meaning of mutual responsibility, yet remains suspect because it has been invoked in too broad a spectrum of cultural contexts, ranging from fascist ideology to human rights. This essential book shows how solidarity may be – should be – conceived as a normative principle with pressing legal content, instrumental to the realisation of the social ends of today’s democratic polities. The author, for the first time in such depth, documents the interweaving of legal norms with social ideas and values, focusing on the use of the principle of solidarity in the European Union’s bodies and in its Member States. There are detailed examinations of how the principle appears in such realms as the following: national constitutions; welfare systems; regulation of contracts; social effects of legal rules; women’s rights; the social market economy; the social doctrine of the Catholic Church; affirmation of corporate social responsibility; and sustainability and corporate governance. Cultural Difference and Social Solidarity: Solidarities and Social Function explores solidarity as a social function bringing to the fore the critical value of the concept of solidarity in understanding contemporary societies. The first part of the book (Solidarities) provides different theoretical approaches to the conception and exploration of solidarity that depart from the traditional and dominant perspectives within which debates about solidarity take place. This part includes chapters on the origins of the concept of solidarity in French social thought in the nineteenth century; a critical discussion of the later Foucault’s augmentation of his concerns with a critical politics of difference with a politics of parrhesia; Theodor Adorno and the identitarian logic that underpins reconciliation between difference and solidarity in initiatives such as multiculturalism; Alisdair MacIntyre and his rearticulation of Aristotelian virtue ethics to explore the value of solidarity ingrained in the practice of politics as a means of developing solidarity; and a transitional chapter that explores the social function of postcolonial theory. The second part of the book (Social Function) seeks to explore particular cases in which solidarity is constituted. The cases are diverse in global location, level of association, focus on cultural, political and policy contexts, and different approaches to analysis. As such, they provide a set of cases from which different aspects of the problems of making and remaking solidarity can be explored.
