Se in Occidente non era permessa la residenza a nessun musulmano ed era inconcepibile l'esistenza di una moschea, l'impero ottomano era invece abitato quasi per metà da cristiani, considerati, è vero, sudditi di seconda classe, ma autorizzati a praticare pubblicamente la loro religione. Solimano aveva potere di vita e di morte e tutti i suoi ministri erano giuridicamente degli schiavi; ma proprio quest'autocrazia creava la mobilità sociale, perché non esisteva nobiltà di nascita ma un sistema di selezione dei talenti che permetteva a figli di pastori di diventare pascià e visir, con grande scandalo degli osservatori europei. Si spiega così che tanti marinai, artigiani, fonditori di cannoni scegliessero di 'farsi turchi', cercando sotto la protezione del sultano un'ascesa sociale impensabile nell'Europa delle gerarchie nobiliari e del diritto di sangue.
