Here you will learn what is and isn't essential, step-by-step. About the Expert In 2003, after what she describes as a rather too close brush with the Grim Reaper, Deneice decided life was meant to be lived as if each day was her last. She sold her house and gave away almost all her belongings, including her successful professional gymnastics coaching business. With her surfboard under her arm and her pack on her back she set out to see what the world could show her. Fifteen years on she is still doing it – without a single regret - and with the majority of those years spent wandering the planet as a solo traveler. In 2010 she began writing and found to her surprise and delight that there were many people who were prepared to pay her for her words. This meant the end of a string of minimum wage jobs around the world which had previously been used to top up the travel funds. Her work as a freelance writer allows her to set up her 'office' wherever she happens to be – from beach huts to the middle of the jungle; sometimes she takes on voluntary work too. She describes herself as a permanent nomad hopelessly addicted to travel and the excitement of constantly learning and exploring, getting lost and found, never knowing what is around the next corner and having amazing encounters with incredible people. For her, everywhere and nowhere is home. Along with the vast collection of memories, stories and adventures her travels have given her she has also discovered, uncovered, realized and gathered a wealth of knowledge. This has made her traveling life significantly easier, far cheaper and helps her to squeeze every last drop of fun from her solo travels. HowExpert publishes quick 'how to' guides on all topics from A to Z by everyday experts.

There are so many people who want to travel but can't find someone to travel with. I was one of those. My husband vowed in 1997 to not ever board another airplane. Yet I had all these wonderful places to visit and cultures to experience. Through trial and error, I found ways to travel solo. I've visited thirty-six countries and counting. Each experience has helped me hone my traveling skills for the next adventure. One of the best parts is I'm able to go where I want when I want and stay if I want. Another person's wants, needs, or limits no longer limit me. And I've realized there are ways to simplify your life while traveling that may apply to the rest of your life, too. Did you know you can visit Japan, one of the most expensive countries in the world, for two weeks for less than $2,000 per person including airfare? I did it solo and even splurged a couple of times. Why does travel call to us?We are a species of nomads, travelers, and wanderers. Throughout history, people gathered in families, families gathered in tribes. We were on the move, searching for better hunting ground, plentiful water, shelter from the elements. Today, we still have that propensity to search and explore. Some call it wanderlust, itchy feet, or my gypsy gene. But travel is scary. Travel is dangerous. Travel is lonely. Travel is filled with uncertainty. Of course, driving a car down the highway on our daily commute is dangerous, too! The difference is we have built our confidence in doing it repeatedly, practiced our driving skills regularly, and have learned what to look out for. And we can do the same with traveling solo, too.So we find more people these days are choosing to happily do just that--travel solo--either alone or with strangers. Why does traveling on your own, by yourself, appeal to you? I can only speak to my own experiences and of contact with others on their own journeys. I hope my insights and hard won lessons helps yoiu on your journey!

After graduating, she traveled the world solo for six months. Her travels took her to Spain, France, Germany, and Romania in Europe. In Asia, she traveled to Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Rebecca decided to travel after her first year in university. She knew that traveling held endless and valuable life-lessons she couldn’t learn at school. While in school, she saved her money, committed to the idea of traveling the world, and then made it a reality for herself. She wrote this guide to pass along advice she was given and help future female solo world travelers. This is Rebecca’s second guide with HowExperts. For her first one, her topic was how to trek through the Manaslu Mountains of Nepal. In the future, Rebecca hopes to write other works and travel. HowExpert publishes quick 'how to' guides on all topics from A to Z by everyday experts.
