Excerpt from The Story of London Here can be no doubt that our interest in the dim past is increased the more we are able to read into the dry documents before us the human character of the actors. As long as these actors are only names to us we seem to be walking in a world Of shadows, but when we can realise them as beings like ourselves with the same feelings and aspirations, although governed by other conditions Of life, all is changed, and we take the keenest interest in attempting to understand circum stances so different from those under which we live. Excerpt from Ins and Outs of London Pages I have not endeavored to produce anything new. The majority of the objects themselves, upon which I have written, are old - and the accounts we have of them are old - but, as I have before stated, the theme is exhaustless. I have principally endeavored to describe persons and things as I found them - nothing more. The pleasure of occupying many leisure hours has repaid me for all trouble taken with my notes and thus, with a clear conscience and without apology, I cast the drop into the fathomless sea of books. Excerpt from London's Story The object of this small book is to explain London as a living city. People often say that London is so difficult to understand, and that its government is in such a muddle that no ordinary person can ever hope to know much about it. That is not true. London is quite simple, if people will only look at it in the right way. The only real excuse for those who do not understand London is that London has never been properly explained to them. In this book I have tried to explain London so that every one can understand it - that is, every one who wants to; for there are plenty of people who live and move about in London without ever wondering about its story, its government or its greatness. But I feel sure that most people are interested in the things around them. They like to be told about their Lord Mayor, their Borough Councils, their parks, tramcars and drain-pipes, their water supply and their electricity. For everything has its story. And London itself, as the biggest city in the world, has a story that is really full of interest. When that story is understood, everything in London becomes clear. This book is, I hope, the forerunner of a larger one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The History of London The history of Roman London is meagre. Seven teen years after the building of the Citadel, on the rebellion of Boadicea, the Roman general Suetonius abandoned the place, as unable to defend it. All those who remained were massacred by the insurgents. After this, so far as we know, for history is silent, there was peace in London for 200 years. Then one Carausius, an officer in command of the fleet stationed in the Channel for the suppression of piracies, assumed the title of emperor. He continued undisturbed for some years, his soldiers remaining faithful to him on account of his wealth: he established a Mint at London and struck a large amount of money there. He was mur dered by one of his officers, Allectus, who called himself emperor in turn and continued to rule in Britain for three years. Then the end came for him as well. The Roman general landing with a large force marched upon London where Allectus lay. A battle fought in the south of London resulted in the overthrow and death of the usurper. His soldiers taking advantage of the confusion began to plunder and. Murder in the town, but were stopped and killed by the victors. Excerpt from Memories of Victorian London May I dare to hope that a few words of preface to this book of "Memories" will hold my readers' attention for a moment, as it is very necessary that they should be written? In my former volume of "Recollections," no reference was made to certain episodes which must always rank among the great days of my life, yet which did not fit in with the general tenor of that book. They had an interest all their own. They could not be dismissed with a passing tribute. They merited more - much more. They haunted me in many a lonely Highland glen, or by the waters of some lapping lake - and the time seems now come when they can be put on record. For it was my happy fate to be from time to time, from early youth onwards, the guest of a beloved relation, to me as a sister, in her London home, where she was the centre of a singularly attractive circle. Albeit a rich and handsome young married woman with abundance of energy and leisure, she cared nothing for gay society, but sought and was sought by many either already prominent in the world of letters, or destined to become so.
