This book is a contribution to the ongoing debate in agrammatism, an acquired language disorder resulting from left hemisphere brain damage. The aim of the book is (1) to give a comprehensive account of agrammatism and outlines and critically examines the different accounts of agrammatic production and asyntactic comprehension, (2) to address morphological and structural properties of Moroccan Arabic agrammatic speech and (3) to put under scrutiny Friedmann and Grodzinsky’s (1997) syntactic account of tense and agreement in production and across modalities. The book attempts to answer two important research questions: Are tense and agreement dissociated as predicted by the Tree-Pruning Hypothesis (Friedmann and Grodzinsky, 1997)? Is the tense/agreement dissociation “production-specific”, or does it extend to comprehension and grammaticality judgment? A third objective of the book is to examine the comprehension abilities of four Moroccan Arabic-speaking agrammatic subjects in the light of the Trace Deletion Hypothesis (Grodzinsky, 1995 a, b). A major research question is whether or not active sentences and subject relative sentences are understood better than object relative sentences. The book takes the view the tense/agreement dissociation reported for Hebrew (Friedmann and Grodzinsky, 1997) and German (Wenzlaff and Clahsen, 2003) can be replicated in Moroccan Arabic. However, the syntactic account as outlined in Friedmann and Grodzinsky (1997) cannot account for the tense/agreement dissociation as Moroccan Arabic has the agreement node above the tense node. In addition, the Trace Deletion Hypothesis cannot account for the comprehension difficulties experienced by the four Moroccan Arabic-speaking agrammatic subjects; the case is so because both subject relatives and object relatives are understood below chance level. Based on data collected through different experimental methods, it is argued that the deficit in agrammatism cannot be explained in terms of a structural account, but rather in terms of a processing account. Access to syntactic knowledge tends to be blocked; grammatical knowledge, however, is entirely intact.

Translating Picturebooks examines the role of illustration in the translation process of picturebooks and how the word-image interplay inherent in the medium can have an impact both on translation practice and the reading process itself. The book draws on a wide range of picturebooks published and translated in a number of languages to demonstrate the myriad ways in which information and meaning is conveyed in the translation of multimodal material and in turn, the impact of these interactions on the readers’ experiences of these books. The volume also analyzes strategies translators employ in translating picturebooks, including issues surrounding culturally-specific references and visual and verbal gaps, and features a chapter with excerpts from translators’ diaries written during the process. Highlighting the complex dynamics at work in the translation process of picturebooks and their implications for research on translation studies and multimodal material, this book is an indispensable resource for students and researchers in translation studies, multimodality, and children’s literature.

Ablaut And Ambiguity written by Jeffrey Heath and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987-01-01 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This volume thoroughly analyzes the phonology of a representative dialect of Moroccan Arabic (MA). This dialect is phonologically interesting because of the existence of numerous productive patterns of derivational ablaut, several types of play speech transformation, and various problems in representation of stems and formalization of rules due to the progressive reduction or disappearance of older short vowels. In examing ablaut, Heath formally models all productive derivational patterns using concepts of mapping and projection from input stems onto output stems, and not making use of abstract "root" representations. The formal details of mapping and projection differ significantly from one pattern to another (several use a bidirectional, i.e., periphery-in, strategy), and each pattern has various idiosyncratic accessory rules. Data from ablaut, play speech, and borrowings are also used extensively to discuss syncope vs. epenthesis analyses of short vowel; short u vs. recognition of labialized consonants kwgwqwxwgw; behavior of geminates; syllabification of sonorants in long consonantal strings; hiatus; and, pharyngealization ("emphasis"). The volume combines descriptive thoroughness and formal rigor with a sensitivity toward unsettled areas in the phonology--structural conflicts, pragmatic aspects of stem representation, and gradually evolving restructurings of the system.

The interface between morphology and phonology has for so long been an intriguing phenomenon that has caught the attention of phonologists and morphologists alike. Along this line of investigation, the focal impetus of the current book is to examine the role of the morpho-phonology interaction in the formation of causative verbs in Moroccan Arabic. In pursuance of this aim, we seek to determine the following: (i) the nature of the causative affix (ii) the morphological process involved (iii) and the driving force of medial gemination. Causative verbs in MA represent a compelling illustration of how morphology and phonology complement each other. In this context, phonological effects appear to be morphologically induced. On the one hand, the morphological component triggers the derivation of some verbal forms (i.e. causatives) from some underlying structure in order to express the meaning of causativity. On the other hand, the phonological component spells out these morphological requirements in the form of a geminate word-medially. This leads to the creation of the causative pattern C G C (or C GV), which is both morphologically and phonologically marked.

This book constitutes the documentation of the scientific outcome of the first meeting of the TIMELY network, the International Workshop on Multidisciplinary Aspects of Time and Time Perception, which took place in Athens, Greece, in October 2010. The 21 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. They cover the following topics: conceptual analysis and measurement of time; exploring factors associated with time perception variability; extending time research to ecologically-valid stimuli and real-world applications; and uncovering the neural correlates of time perception.
