St John's Cathedral is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane. It was the vision of the third Bishop of Brisbane, William Webber, to build an Anglican Cathedral in the Queensland capital. For this purpose, he engaged architect John Loughborough Pearson (1817 - 1897) who had already designed Truro Cathedral in Cornwall. After the Foundation stone was laid in 1901 the building proceeded in three stages: 1906 - 1910, 1964 - 1968 and 1989 - 2009. St John's Cathedral has come to house a fine collection of 61 stained glass windows which reflect these three distinct building phases. Beautiful late 19th and early 20th Century glass fills much of the east end, doing the task stained glass has done for centuries: capturing in figurative language the stories of the faith and allowing generation after generation to steep themselves in the story of God's goodness and love. John Pearson's son Frank (1864-1947) went on to commission many of the early glass designs of William Bustard (1894-1973) and other artisans, which were made by such luminary firms as Burlinson & Grylls in the UK and R S Exton & Co in Brisbane. The 1960s mid-section glass includes the distinctive bold styles of glass artists David Kellock (1946-1978) and David Saunders, among others, capturing the vibrancy and self-confidence of that age. More recent additions in the West End portray the Cathedral as a future-focused place, ready to engage with the issues and needs of the current age. Designers Glenn Mack and Scott Maxwell conceived some of the latest, early 21st Century glass with the latter's tripartite Millennium Window created in 2001 and officially unveiled by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 2002. The Cathedral's windows create amazing light shows on the stone columns as the sunlight enters through the Genesis windows above the Ambulatory in the morning, culminating with the afternoon sun flooding through the Millennium Window above the West End doors. The dazzling rainbows and shots of colour change with Brisbane's sub-tropical seasons too, from the lower angles of the clearer northern light during the winter months to the hotter overhead glare of the city's summer. Efforts by photographers and designers to document these unique glass creations are both counterintuitive and vitally important. No two visitors ever experience the same prismatic explosions and subtle casts of coloured light. Replicating the stained-glass lancets in offset-press process inks will, inherently, fall short of those in-person, individual experiences. But the windows' distance in time - more than a century after designs were first committed to paper - and space - many lancets (not to mention the magnificent Rose Window in the North Transept) are tens of metres overhead the viewer - merits their documenting in as much magnificent detail as possible. The Tenth Anniversary, in October 2019, of the Consecration of the structurally-complete St John's Cathedral is an opportunity to revisit the globally-popular, sold-out first edition (2013) of WINDOWS with this fully-revised, expanded second edition (30cm x 30cm softback) of 144 pages (with 8 fold-out panels) featuring around 100 images and illustrations.
