During the last few years, the field of nonlinear problems has undergone great development. This book consisting of the updated Grundlehren volume 252 by the author and of a newly written part, deals with some important geometric problems that are of interest to many mathematicians and scientists but have only recently been partially solved. Each problem is explained, up-to-date results are given and proofs are presented. Thus, the reader is given access, for each specific problem, to its present status of solution as well as to the most up-to-date methods for approaching it. The main objective of the book is to explain some methods and new techniques, and to apply them. It deals with such important subjects as variational methods, the continuity method, parabolic equations on fiber.

Uniqueness Theorems For Variational Problems By The Method Of Transformation Groups written by Wolfgang Reichel and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-04-30 with Mathematics categories.
A classical problem in the calculus of variations is the investigation of critical points of functionals {\cal L} on normed spaces V. The present work addresses the question: Under what conditions on the functional {\cal L} and the underlying space V does {\cal L} have at most one critical point? A sufficient condition for uniqueness is given: the presence of a "variational sub-symmetry", i.e., a one-parameter group G of transformations of V, which strictly reduces the values of {\cal L}. The "method of transformation groups" is applied to second-order elliptic boundary value problems on Riemannian manifolds. Further applications include problems of geometric analysis and elasticity.

Differential Geometry And Continuum Mechanics written by Gui-Qiang G. Chen and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-11 with Mathematics categories.
This book examines the exciting interface between differential geometry and continuum mechanics, now recognised as being of increasing technological significance. Topics discussed include isometric embeddings in differential geometry and the relation with microstructure in nonlinear elasticity, the use of manifolds in the description of microstructure in continuum mechanics, experimental measurement of microstructure, defects, dislocations, surface energies, and nematic liquid crystals. Compensated compactness in partial differential equations is also treated. The volume is intended for specialists and non-specialists in pure and applied geometry, continuum mechanics, theoretical physics, materials and engineering sciences, and partial differential equations. It will also be of interest to postdoctoral scientists and advanced postgraduate research students. These proceedings include revised written versions of the majority of papers presented by leading experts at the ICMS Edinburgh Workshop on Differential Geometry and Continuum Mechanics held in June 2013. All papers have been peer reviewed.

Handbook Of Differential Equations Ordinary Differential Equations written by A. Canada and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-09-09 with Mathematics categories.
The book contains seven survey papers about ordinary differential equations. The common feature of all papers consists in the fact that nonlinear equations are focused on. This reflects the situation in modern mathematical modelling - nonlinear mathematical models are more realistic and describe the real world problems more accurately. The implications are that new methods and approaches have to be looked for, developed and adopted in order to understand and solve nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The purpose of this volume is to inform the mathematical community and also other scientists interested in and using the mathematical apparatus of ordinary differential equations, about some of these methods and possible applications.

Geometry And Its Applications written by Vladimir Rovenski and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-05 with Mathematics categories.
This volume has been divided into two parts: Geometry and Applications. The geometry portion of the book relates primarily to geometric flows, laminations, integral formulae, geometry of vector fields on Lie groups and osculation; the articles in the applications portion concern some particular problems of the theory of dynamical systems, including mathematical problems of liquid flows and a study of cycles for non-dynamical systems. This Work is based on the second international workshop entitled "Geometry and Symbolic Computations," held on May 15-18, 2013 at the University of Haifa and is dedicated to modeling (using symbolic calculations) in differential geometry and its applications in fields such as computer science, tomography and mechanics. It is intended to create a forum for students and researchers in pure and applied geometry to promote discussion of modern state-of-the-art in geometric modeling using symbolic programs such as MapleTM and Mathematica® , as well as presentation of new results.

Functional Inequalities New Perspectives And New Applications written by Nassif Ghoussoub and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-09 with Mathematics categories.
"The book describes how functional inequalities are often manifestations of natural mathematical structures and physical phenomena, and how a few general principles validate large classes of analytic/geometric inequalities, old and new. This point of view leads to "systematic" approaches for proving the most basic inequalities, but also for improving them, and for devising new ones--sometimes at will and often on demand. These general principles also offer novel ways for estimating best constants and for deciding whether these are attained in appropriate function spaces. As such, improvements of Hardy and Hardy-Rellich type inequalities involving radially symmetric weights are variational manifestations of Sturm's theory on the oscillatory behavior of certain ordinary differential equations. On the other hand, most geometric inequalities, including those of Sobolev and Log-Sobolev type, are simply expressions of the convexity of certain free energy functionals along the geodesics on the Wasserstein manifold of probability measures equipped with the optimal mass transport metric. Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg and Hardy-Rellich-Sobolev type inequalities are then obtained by interpolating the above two classes of inequalities via the classical ones of Hölder. The subtle Moser-Onofri-Aubin inequalities on the two-dimensional sphere are connected to Liouville type theorems for planar mean field equations."--Publisher's website.
