Excerpt from Some Problems of Lotze's Theory of Knowledge This monograph was written while the author was a graduate student at Cornell University, and was intended as a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Although the author had intended before publishing to add to the work an historical introduction dealing with the position of philosophy in Germany at the time when Lotze's views were forming, and had collected some material for this purpose, the study of Lots which he had undertaken was in all essentials complete at the time of his death. The first chapter had been rewritten and revised, and the remaining chapters, although lacking the author's final touch, would not probably have been changed greatly either in form or substance. In preparing the manuscript for the press, I have made no changes except in occasional passages where the addition or substitution of a word or phrase seemed necessary in order to render the meaning clearer. With regard to the general method and purpose of the study a word may be necessary. The author purposely refrained from criticism of particular passages or isolated statements in the system with which he was dealing. The aim of his study was sympathetically to interpret the spirit of Lotze's system as a whole-to do justice to the philosopher by taking him at his best rather than to exhibit the literal inconsistencies of his system. Edward Proctor Robins was born at Central Bedeque, Prince Edward Island, July 2, 1872. After passing through the primary and grammar schools of his native place, he entered Prince of Wales College, Charlottetown, at the age of sixteen. In the fall of 1891 he matriculated into Dalhousie College, Halifax, N. S. Although his preparation would have enabled him to enter the second year in any Canadian college, he characteristically preferred to take the full four years' course. In this groundbreaking study, Marcus Long explores the theories of Hermann Lotze, Bernard Bosanquet, and John Dewey and their contributions to the field of epistemology. Long argues that these philosophers shared a commitment to a naturalistic approach to knowledge and that their work can be understood as a collective effort to build a more comprehensive and integrated theory of knowledge. In a letter of 1932, Karl Popper described Die beiden Grundprobleme der Erkenntnistheorie – The Two Fundamental Problems of the Theory of Knowledge – as ‘...a child of crises, above all of ...the crisis of physics.’ Finally available in English, it is a major contribution to the philosophy of science, epistemology and twentieth century philosophy generally. The two fundamental problems of knowledge that lie at the centre of the book are the problem of induction, that although we are able to observe only a limited number of particular events, science nevertheless advances unrestricted universal statements; and the problem of demarcation, which asks for a separating line between empirical science and non-science. Popper seeks to solve these two basic problems with his celebrated theory of falsifiability, arguing that the inferences made in science are not inductive but deductive; science does not start with observations and proceed to generalise them but with problems, which it attacks with bold conjectures. The Two Fundamental Problems of the Theory of Knowledge is essential reading for anyone interested in Karl Popper, in the history and philosophy of science, and in the methods and theories of science itself.

Originally published in 1916. This book reviews the common problems of philosophy and then critiques the varied epistemological theories of the time. A theory of knowledge may be either dualistic or monistic and realistic or idealistic. Examining the resulting doctrines at the beginning, this book then goes on to consider mysticism, psychology, logic, consciousness, intellectualism and then scientific method. A fascinating insight into early Twentieth century philosophy.

International legal positivism has been crucial to the development of international law since the nineteenth century. It is often seen as the basis of mainstream or traditional international legal thought. The Project of Positivism in International Law addresses this theory in the long-standing tradition of critical intellectual histories of international law. It provides a nuanced analysis of the resilience of the economic-positivist theory, and shows how influential its role was in shaping the modern frameworks of international law. The book argues that the rise of positivist international law was inseparable from philosophical developments placing the notion of conflict of interests at the centre of collective life. Where previously international thought was dominated by notions of the right, the just, and the good, increasingly international relations became viewed as 'interests' in need of harmonisation. In this context, international law was re-founded as the universal law that could harmonise the interests of both public and private international entities. The book argues that these evolutions in philosophical thought were bound up with the consolidation of capitalism, and with the ideas about human existence and human nature which emerged in that process. It provides an innovative analysis of the selected biography of ideas which it presents, including a detailed focus on the work of Hans Kelsen, one of the leading positivist thinkers of the twentieth century. It also argues that the work of Lassa Oppenheim should be included within this analysis, as providing some of the key founding texts of positivism in international law. This book will be a fascinating read for scholars and students of international legal theory, historians of ideas, and legal philosophers.

Excerpt from The Theory of Knowledge: A Contribution to Some Problems of Logic and Metaphysics The world of thought at the present day is in a somewhat anomalous condition. We have come to the point where science seems to stand in real danger of being ruined by her own success. The mass of accumulated fact on which she justly prides herself has become too vast for any single, mind to master. There could be no Aristotle in the nineteenth century. Year by year it becomes more difficult to take any sort of view of the whole field of knowledge which should be at once comprehensive and accurate. It results that positive knowledge can scarcely be said any longer to have a general purpose or tendency. Intellectually, it is an age of detail. The unity which we miss in science we might hope to find in philosophy. And here, indeed, our century has done its best. In Germany, in France, and in England it has produced great systems, containing elements of high permanent value. But these systems date from before the deluge of specialism. And they have all been, not so much refuted, - for a dialectical refutation can, after all, be lived down, - as undermined by the subsequent movement of thought and discovery. Nor is this all. Not only is there no accepted scientific system, but in England, at least, the tendency of philosophic work is scarcely sympathetic to science. So far from seeing our way to a near or distant synthesis, we are more distracted than ever when we turn from science to philosophy. Instead of uniting the sciences, philosophy threatens to become a separate and even a hostile doctrine. The antagonism is doubtless veiled, and the philosopher, like the theologian, is careful to avoid direct conflict with a far stronger foe. But the veil is not difficult to pierce.
