Excerpt from Some Problems of Philosophy To enumerate all of the difficulties of Philosophy which have thus far not been wholly removed would be to give a synop sis of a philosophical system. It is possi ble, however, to classify the problems and the difficulties which lie in the way of those who study Philosophy, and the recognition of obstacles is usually the first step toward their removal. Excerpt from The Problems of Philosophy I have derived valuable assistance from unpublished writings of Mr. G. E. Moore and Mr. J. M. Keynes: from the former, as te gards the relations of sense-data to physical objects, and from the latter as regards prob ability and induction. I have also profited greatly by the criticisms and suggestions of Professor Gilbert Murray. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Problems in Philosophy This volume may seem to be constructed on the idea of gathering up the fragments that nothing may be lost. This precept, however, wise as it often is, does not express the law of production in the present case. A few points in philosophy invited more clear or more thorough state ment. This labor I chose to undertake directly and briefly, rather than to attempt it as a part of a more ex tended and systematic work. One evil in philosophy is the accumulation of fruitless discussions. A few positions fortunately taken may be easily lost in their practical value by the extended treatises which accompany them, traversing old ground with no sufl'icient reward. Philoso phy, above most topics, calls for an explicit statement of a few fundamental principles, and a pushing of inquiry in reference to them, till some satisfactory conclusion is reached. The present volume aims to make, in the most direct way, a contribution on the more obscure topics of philosophy. What it has to say is not, taken collectively, extended, and may be still farther reduced by the reader by confining his attention to the one or more subjects which may appeal directly to him. Only one of these discussions - that on liberty - has appeared elsewhere, and that essay has been somewhat modified. The Problems Of Philosophy written by John Grier Hibben and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-24 with Philosophy categories.

This philosophy book is a perfect introduction for anyone interested in the subject. The central theme of the book is discussion of the big questions (the "Problems" of the title) which philosophy strives to answer. There are other philosophy books with similar titles, including an identically titled book by the famous philosopher Bertrand Russell (also available from Forgotten Books and well worth a look), but this one contains arguably the best introduction to the broadest range of philosophical thought. John Grier Hibben, was broadly educated and seemed to excel at anything he turned his hand to. He graduated as a mathematician, earned a living teaching French and German and was for many years a widely respected preacher. After gaining a PhD he taught philosophy at Princeton and later became its president. The first two chapters of this book discuss the nature and value of philosophy. In the words of Hibben, "Philosophy is concerned with what is, in contrast with that which seems to be." The grand Problem then is to "discover the nature of reality." The other chapters cover discussions of existence, origins, the soul (whether as in the religious meaning or the sum of a consciousness), knowledge, logic, ethics (and it's sub-Problem, politics, or human relations) and finally of art and aesthetics. These are all covered in detail and with a great explanation, comparison and discussion of the different schools of thought, which is what makes this book so fascinating as an introduction to philosophy. If this book has a flaw it is that the different forms of religious thought are given too much attention in comparison to other philosophies, which may not be so interesting for the less religious times in which we now live. There is still plenty here for even the most ardent atheist however. The beauty of the writing is that even though the author is obviously deeply intelligent and knowledgeable about his topic the text remains accessible and the explanations clear and jargon-free. Excerpt from The Persistent Problems of Philosophy: An Introduction to Metaphysics, Through the Study of Modern Systems It is only fair to point out, finally, that the book, though mainly exposition and criticism, is written from the stand point of a metaphysical theory fairly well defined. This I have indicated in my last chapter. My philosophical predilections have inevitably colored my criticisms; but I trust that they have not distorted my interpretation of the thought Of the philosophers whom I have considered, and that the book may, therefore, be of service to those who do not agree with its estimates or with its conclusions. Excerpt from Problems of Philosophy: Or Principles of Epistemology and Metaphysics Of course there were differences of opinion regarding the nature of cosmic unity, whether of the pluralistic or monistic type, but all agreed that there was a unity of some kind, so that, in so far as the process of knowledge was concerned, the differences of Opinion turned on the sensory or intellectual, or in modern parlance, the materialistic and the spiritual, view of this knowledge, the conflict being between the com mon and the educated man in regard to the world and its phenomena, though in general they held to very much the same propositions. Excerpt from An Introduction to Philosophy The Introduction to Philosophy which I here offer to the public gives a general view of philosophical problems and explains the tendencies of the various attempts to solve them. It seeks to provoke the reader to think over the great problems of life. It is in no sense an introduction to a special philosophical system, but it makes a very Wide survey of all the possibilities in the way of solutions. Naturally, it is based upon the author's personal view, as the student of philosophy will easily perceive; but this will not be pressed, or suffered to influence the author's judgment in appraising other systems of thought. In View of the aim of the work I have not found it necessary to burden it with literary references to the historic systems to which reference is made in its pages. Excerpt from A History of English Philosophy The purpose of this book is to trace the history of philosophy in Great Britain from the time when it began to be written in the English language until the end of the Victorian era. There are two ways of writing the history of philosophy. One of them sets out from the standpoint of philosophy as conceived by the writer; the other from that of the philosophers themselves. On the former method the fundamental problems of philosophy will be presented at the outset, and each step taken towards their definition and solution will then be noted; whatever is irrelevant to the main issue will be left out of sight, however important it may have been in the minds of some of the philosophers. On the latter method the subject will be approached as it appeared to each philosopher in turn, and the presen tation of definite concepts and clear issues will emerge gradually as the story progresses. Each of these methods has its own advantages and its own dangers. The former concentrates upon the essential, but it is liable to miss historical proportion by stressing certain features and overlooking others. The latter keeps in close touch with the documents, but care is needed to prevent the meaning of the whole from being obscured by details. Excerpt from Philosophical Problems in the Light of Vital Organization Pondering philosophical questions from the standpoint of natural science, the present writer has during a lifetime of research become convinced that some of the principal standing problems which have vexed ancient and modem thinkers may find their more or less complete solution by having recourse in their interpretation to facts of vital organization. What is consciously realized as nature takes, undeniably, place in living beings, as an outcome of their peculiar constitution and its inherent faculties. It seems, therefore, prima facie probable that the direct way to gain a proximate understanding of what is thus consciously revealed as nature is to show by what means of vital organization and functional activity such conscious revelation becomes possible. It has lately been rendered obvious, even to naturalistic thinkers, that what we consciously experience as nature cannot be the mere outcome of atomic mechanics, that the materialistic and mechanical hypotheses are incompetent to account for all that takes place in nature; incompetent, in truth, adequately to account for any natural occurrence, whether physical or psychical.
